The objective of the game is to be the person to go across the board and come to the end of the board with the most amount of money from energy/water optimization techniques and most chips for the most questions correctly answered from the trivia booklet. We believe that through this game, we'll be able to enlighten people about SDG 7: Access to clean & affordable energy and SDG 13: Climate Action The 1st version of the game is based on the home setting. The game gives the players knowledge on how to optimize energy use in the home in the following areas of energy/water use: Lighting Entertainment Refrigeration Cooking Water pumping Water heating Laundry Air conditioning Renewable energy The Optimizer has several game pieces. These are: Die:- It is rolled so that the player can move their game pieces across the board. Game pieces:- These are the avatars used by the players to move across the board Cash:- This is what is given/taken to/from the player depending on the square the player falls on across the board Opticards:- These are cards that are picked instructing the player on what impact optimization or non-optimization action taken has on the energy cost of the house. They come in two color codes; red and green. Opti-chips:- These are chips that are given/taken to/from a player whenever they answer a trivia question in the knowledge center correctly or incorrectly. Penalty card:- These cards are picked when the player is on the penalty zone of the board. They help pace the game. Trivia Booklet:- This booklet is used by the players to ask each other questions about energy. It has several categories from which these questions can be asked from.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The target of this first version will be targeting people above the age of 7 living in urban areas as a pilot. As they play the game, they learn techniques of energy/water efficiency and conservation in their homes. The impact will be measured on how much knowledge they learn and apply it in their places of residence. It is an awareness creation tool of which we'll be able to measure how much knowledge was disseminated to the masses through sales of the board game and playing it. The materials used to manufacture the board game will be from sustainable material such as waste paper/plastics and wood chips. The quantities of games sold will also impact the environment positively by offsetting this kind of waste from the environment.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The Optimizer board game is protected under Kenyan copyright law to protect the IP. We have partnered with a creative consultant who is going to help in designing the visuals and marketing the board game. We are seeking a manufacturing and printing partner who will help in mass production, and also seek to work with NGOs who will help in distributing the game to the masses. At the moment, we are bootstrapping to raise capital for pilot versions of the game but we'd love to raise external capital for mass production. Our business model majorly entails sale of products but looking for distributorship partners for consequent versions for rural homes, schools and corporate companies. We're also looking to develop a digital version for mobile and web app where we look to generate revenue through ads on energy optimization technologies.
Born in September 24th 1990, I'm a product of two environmental conservationists. Growing up, I was taught the importance of a well maintained natural environment by my parents and my teachers. By age 12, I'd planted 8 trees in my home and 6 in my primary school compounds. I tend to think I was indoctrinated on this path subliminally as I ended up being a mechanical engineer passionate about energy optimization for a sustainable future on this planet; something similar to how my parents and teachers did it. Today, I have 5+ years of experience in energy management having worked in an energy audit firm, building and construction design company and now being part of an enthusiastic team of professionals at Creos Holdings Ltd. I have been able to develop human centered cost effective energy optimization services which have helped clients in agriculture, manufacturing, home residences, hospitality and commercial buildings, reduce their energy consumption and consequently their carbon footprints, by 5-50% through implementing no-cost to high cost energy conservation measures.
