The Cranky Frankly Podcast
Explain your idea in details:
I am a 17 year old from Mumbai and during the lockdown, I wanted to reflect on my activities and make the best out of my skills, as well as gain experience. I called my friend in Kolkata, and asked him to be my co-host and he didn't think twice. The Cranky Frankly Podcast is a social and interactive project where we try to engage our audience with a wide variety of topics. Our USP is our age. Some people consider teenagers to be 'immature' or 'younger people who lack wisdom.' We want to implicitly change this perception by collaborating with other students and professionals and voice out our knowledge and interpretations. Our secondary aim is to create awareness about certain topics and we don't mention it in our marketing or the episodes itself, because we believe that our listeners must imply it. We have had an overwhelming response in our podcasts so far and have decided to allocate more time to the business aspect of the project, which is Public Relations, Marketing and Operations, in terms of editing.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
We upload our podcasts on YouTube and we have almost 50 subscribers with 1000+ channel views. Although it's not the biggest student-run project or the one with the most subscribers, I think that the impact is what is more valuable. The primary sustainable development that the podcast adheres to is quality education. By opening out our listeners to multiple topics, interpretations and personalities, our aim is to enhance the quality of what our listeners learn. We are student-biased because a large majority of our target audience are students and we try to be as relatable as possible, being students ourselves. Being an enquirer is key to learn anything new, and our podcasts could raise interesting questions in our listeners' heads. That is the first step to learning anything new. Listeners are open to reaching out to me for further discussion, or could even conduct basic research to satisfy. Alternatively, our podcast has a wide spectrum of topics and we aim to have discussions about industries that we relate to and our relevant for us. By expressing our opinions and factual knowledge, we open our listeners to new industries and understandings. Student entrepreneurship, for example, was one of our biggest projects. The reason for the video's success was the fact that it was an innovative niche and with the help of our guest, we enhanced our knowledge and capabilities.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The Cranky Frankly Podcast has it's own professional email address, Instagram account and YouTube channel, where the episodes are streamed. So far, the project does not involve money or finance at all, whether it be costs or revenues. We only invest our time and effort and are driven by the intrinsic motivation to be podcasters or influencers. Collaboration is our key aspect as we aim to have strong Public Relations to collaborate with people who wish to inspire, or even simply have a discussion on a trending topic. We have high hopes in transitioning into mass media, as currently we only cater to a niche audience. As a result, money is not a key motivator or factor which influences our decisions. We would aim to collaborate with brands, if feasible, for promoting their activities in exchange for us being featured and associated with them. I have written dozens of cold-emails to brands and we are waiting for the day we struck gold.
I am Eshaan Thapar. I am 17 years old (born 27/06/2003) and I am an IBDP student in India. My vision in life is to be someone who can bring out positive changes to the world. I am pursuing a bachelor's degree in Business and Management to pursue entrepreneurship. I am also a sports enthusiast, having represented my school in football and cricket tournaments for almost a decade now. I initiated the idea of The Business Club in my school, being the first individual to do it in my school's history. I was able to understand and implement business concepts, as well as teach peers and juniors about the functions of businesses. To further enhance my understanding of business and management, I have attended numerous workshops and virtual programs. I am an aspiring entrepreneur and The Cranky Frankly Podcast is my first and hopefully the most memorable project which I initiate. Academically, I had got a DISTINCTION in my ICE certificate for my IGCSE exams and a score of 37/42 IB points in my most recent set of examinations. However, I enjoy discovering things other than what is limited in my school's curriculum, and again, the podcast is the perfect medium for it.
