The Ocean Hourglass (OHG)
Explain your idea in details:
The OHGS main objective is to start taking actions beforehand because the ocean hourglass logo represents the significance of every second and minute being lost due to human activity that destroys wildlife, marine life, and nature. We have been ignoring the consequences and doubling our carbon emissions causing Antarctica to melt in the next 500 years. From this, we attain knowledge of how we can start living sustainably now and not tomorrow. There is a quote that states With great power comes great responsibility which OHG holds as their morals meaning that every outcome depends on the action taken and therefore we want the idea to inspire and motivate the youth to thrive stronger than before. OHGs activities include weekly community cleanups of your hometown. Ethical activities like geo agricultural trips to islands give a new perspective outlook of the agricultural sector in the Maldives. Information regarding farming of the three main stages such as input, process, and output is taught to school children. Maldives agriculture is widely dependent on the fishes and water uses which gave us the idea of using an innovative approach known as sustainable crop production which creates an agricultural production where the environment of biodiversity and quality of agricultural crops aren't harmed. Another innovative approach is using hydrogen fuel for transportation vehicles of the photo tree containers. In order to yield the crops, organic fertilizers would be used instead of chemical fertilizers to keep the vegetables fresh. Soil fertility is a crucial factor in farming as found in our research which determined that the Maldives needed the allocated resources but due to climate changes it was difficult to do so.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The expected impact of our idea has many advantages to society, the environment, and also marine lives. Ideas such as banning plastic bottles and also limiting the amount of plastic we use will bring us forward to a better and safer environment. Our idea consists of a variety of gadgets that aims to inspire more people to go green. Our target is to completely ban using all types of materials that include menacing toxins which can harm the environment and the atmosphere around it. The objectives are to encourage and promote people to use more eco-friendly and biodegradable products such as wooden brushes, metal straws, and cloth bags. Furthermore implementing suitable OHG products to businesses to form an ethical safe sustainable future for all. We aim to also collaborate with other ethical social enterprises that provide products that are affordable and good quality. Along with evaluating the progress of how our products are useful to society and whether they can uplift a culture of concepts such as saving the blue, going green, and allocating a road map to success. This involves financial planning so it is not expensive and can be made by recycled items. In addition to sustaining the idea by breaking down the goals of OHG organization to more achievable tasks in the long term to Improve for the future.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The 0HG consists of the first gadget known as ECO. The ECO Series has three channels. The eco-1 tube recycles plastic, rubber, and foam products and reduces waste. The second tube Eco- 2 recycles rotten fruits and vegetables into fertilizers, instead of directly throwing rotten fruits into the soil and using up the nitrogen in the soil, this machine slices, dries, and then smashes and crumbles them. The third tube Eco-3 purifies carbon emissions in the air and discards all toxins. The Eco tube has few holes that are filled with rainwater when it rains causing the plants inside to be automatically watered. The glass bowl acts as a medium-size greenhouse with solar panels that use solar energy to electrically run the product by sucking the air and grinding the food. The other gadget is called the PHOTO TREE that reuses paper from businesses and schools that waste tons of paper which comes from trees that were cut down in large amounts just for the sake of writing or printing documents. The Photo tree box is kept in places that use paper and at the end of the day, they discard the paper. Then, the paper is transferred to nearby facilities and the procedure of grinding paper to a liquid form and laying it on wood sheets to dry them in the sun creating pastel-colored reusable paper notebooks. OHG involves tasks of sending weekly scuba diving teams to sea and signs of no touching the corals to avoid destructions of barrier reefs. Fines and providing community service charges will be implied to individuals who litter in public places. OHGs financial sources and collaborators are social enterprises that market the product and provide donations to them so it will help charities such as Cancer,(BLM), Red Crescent(Maldives).
Radha Mohamed and Aminath Naureen Jiyad are 14 and 15-year olds, which are ninth-graders currently studying at Billabong High International School in the Maldives. Growing up in the beautiful country, they experienced the island life near the blue ocean and the sandy beaches. However, around 2012 a state of emergency was declared due to climate issues causing erosion of islands. As it was a major problem, the former president gathered members of his cabinet for an underwater cabinet meeting to draw the attention of rising sea levels. Due to this Radha and Naureen tried to find ways to contribute to their environment through platforms such as social media. Likewise, the school implemented ethical procedures such as being the first school in Male to use solar energy to reduce carbon footprint. OHG founders also joined upcoming projects such as eco clubs and participated in a program called Parley which the students bring plastic bottles from home to give to facilities that renew and reuse them. As well as a science fair project by them known as the Rain Harvesting Project that reused rainwater for gardening. During the past few years, there were multiple beach clean-ups and diving activities to pick trash. The outcome of these activities resulted in the idea of planning to build an urban farm on the roof of the school. Moreover, the school allowed a new strategy of education known as BYOD (bring your own device) as a way of reducing paper usage and encouraging virtual textbooks. Despite the cost, the government agreed to provide for students without gadgets. With that in said, OHG founders are glad to say that they have learnt from their experiences and have strived to make a difference by creating an idea that looks at all aspects of todays global climate changes.
