Styrofoam recycling and its secondary use in dealing with the pollution problem
Explain your idea in details:
Creating a relief panel is a startup specializing in the processing of foam waste, which aims to implement zero waste and sustainable cities and communities and thus improve the ecological situation of Kazakhstan since the problem of pollution with the rubbish dumps (especially with plastic) is highly acute. It is planned to be done by creating a panel, which in turn will be used as an insulator and will be sold at a very competitive price. The project includes the creation of the polystyrene collection point, from where the polystyrene will be delivered to the place where it will be crushed and then mixed with gypsum.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Styrofoam is used in transporting furniture, glass, fragile items, and household appliances, in the manufacture of toys, etc. In this regard, such a large-scale distribution of the material and its daily use in our life creates the problem of irrational use of foam. Since the bulk of the foam is gas, it spreads quickly and easily over the earth's surface. Therefore, it is difficult to collect. Also, a large amount of foam is thrown into landfills in cities and into streams and rivers. If we take into account the fact that, when burning, the foam emits a huge amount of toxic substances, among which styrene is especially poisonous, it means that it will be extremely dangerous to human health to process it by burning. Styrene is such a toxic substance in polystyrene foam. Inhalation of styrene vapour threatens numerous acute and chronic diseases. This substance negatively affects the function of the liver and kidneys, the circulatory and nervous systems. Therefore, the construction of foam collection points and then it's further processing in this way will be able to reduce a large amount of foam waste and landfills in cities and the risk of diseases in humans. Hence this idea will have its weight in ensuring the safety, resilience and environmental sustainability of cities and towns.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
To implement the creation of a foam collection and its further processing, we need the initial capital. This capital is obtained from personal funds, prizes from startups/business competitions. The project launch period from the date of financing - 3 months.
My name is Kulyan and I am a 12th grade student of Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. At the moment, I am deeply studying biology and chemistry. Also, Im very interested in olympiad and project activities. which is why I decided to take part in such a large-scale competition. My interest lies in gaining experience. By taking part, I will be able to acquire, consolidate and develop practical knowledge and skills necessary in my future professional activity, as well as the experience of self-organization. I plan to associate my future life with medicine, but not only because I like chemistry and biology, but because indifference in my personality prevails over all other qualities. I always try to help, I am open to all possible questions, tasks, and so on. Therefore, I am not indifferent to the life of the people around me and the whole world. Today, the ecological situation has deteriorated significantly. In elementary school, I believed that only people who know something in the field of ecology are capable of fixing this situation. However, you and I can become these people too. I am a sympathetic person and always try to lend a helping hand. And this time is no exception. Therefore, I really hope that this project will make at least a small contribution to the beginning of something significant.
