Explain your project in details:
Garbage Clinical Insurance (GCI) is a micro health insurance program which uses garbage as a financial resource. With this program, the community pays clinical services by using garbage in an insurance scheme. This way can make the community mobilize their own unused resources to improve health access and breakdown barrier between health facilities and community. Garbage is the best solution because almost every day, every house produces garbage which is not used, so that all citizens can join our program. For instance, an urban area like Malang, where this program has been developed, produces more than 55.000 tons of solid waste everyday, but only 50-60 percent is collected. Practically, in general, residents must pay fee to government to dispose their garbage, but GCI offer residents to submit their garbage worth 10.000 IDR to us, which is used to cover their health care in a holistic manner, cover the patient's treatment (curative), make health care quality improvement programs (health promotion), prevent illness (preventive), and provide rehabilitative health care, such as free treatment, inclinic counseling, laboratory check, etc.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
Garbage Clinical Insurance are focused on creating both environmental and health value. The main principle of GCI is organizing community to create sustainable financing from their own resources in order to improve the access and the quality of public health program from the promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative aspects. On the other side, it becomes an incentive for the community to start a proper waste management and waste entrepreneurship from household level. To a certain extent, it also contributes to local sanitation improvement. GCI increases garbage value exponentially, so GCI empowers every individual to mobilize overlooked resources and take an active role in managing health financing. We change the perception and habits of the community to garbage with new inovation system of garbage insurance scheme. We promote health investments with garbage. We want to give freedom from fear, afraid, worry, and pain, because we believe, health is fundamental human rights. Up to now, Garbage Clinical Insurance has achieved 493 members registered to our clinic, with more than 12,528 home visits for providing healthcare services, and also have gathered 474 volunteers to join in our project. However, we are not satisfied yet with this numbers, since there are millions of people in the country who need the existence of garbage Clinical Insurance in that area. Therefore, to build independence and sustainability, we should keep working on it. The support from other parties is indeed important since we should open up a new clinic, hire officer, and conduct further replication management to make sure the program run well in other cities in Indonesia
Sustainability and future plans
Our team focuses on the stage of development in GCI into massive replication and scientific approach for this new garbage insurance scheme. In developing this product, we have applied scientific aspect and research in order to make the referral program as a role model or a reliable innovative micro-insurance. GCI is a prototype of micro health insurance system with funding through the garbage insurance scheme which can be replicated in other regions and can be adopted as government program to expand the usefulness.
