Project main objectives: -To make youth and women embrace farming as a business. -To create a socially and economically productive society. -To improve production and productivity of agriculture enterprises. -To promote sustainable/climate smart agriculture. -To improve on the livelihoods of the beneficiaries. Main activities: -Registration of the beneficiaries. -Carrying out a baseline survey. -Development of training manuals. -Training of the beneficiaries. -Organisation of the business to business linkages for partnerships and signing of contracts. -Training of the collective marketing committees. -Evaluation of partnership performance. -Identification and development of case stories for documentation into success stories. -Graduation of farmer groups into cooperatives. Innovative approaches: -Use for database management system for evaluation of farmers. -Engagement of all agriculture value chain actors in the project. -Use of group collective marketing committees to ease collective marketing of produce. -Demand driven production approach. -Promotion of a saving culture among youth and women. -Development of youth and women led enterprises.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
Our achievements: -At least 2,000 households and 10,000 individuals reached and benefited from our services with a 45% improvement in household income and a 35% improvement on the household savings. -At least 40 bulking centers established at group level to ease collective marketing. -2 local seed business groups established with a 45% improvement on access to quality seed. -2,000 farmers able to access soft agriculture loans from our partner Finance Trust Bank with a 2% interest rate and loans payable after farmers have sold to the contracted agro-processing company. -At least 5 agro-processing companies contracted to buy grain from farmers at a premium price. -4 credible input dealers contracted to provide farmers with quality inputs. -5 farmer groups graduated and registered as cooperatives with one being a women cooperative. -1 Higher level farmer organisation formed with 5 members which we recommended for funding in Vegetable Oil Development project (VODP2) where they got a 200 million Uganda shillings grant for constructing a store and an office from IFAD and government of Uganda. -At least 40 Village Savings and Loan Associations established and functioning.
Sustainability and future plans
Our business model: Our model is based on contracts and partnerships. We invite partners from agriculture value chain who subscribe to us and we recommend them to our registered farmers in a business to business meeting. Negotiations with the farmers is done and contracts signed. Financing source: -Subscription fees from registered farmers. -Subscription fees from our partners. -Our income generating projects. -Contracts for extension services. -Grants Plans for the future: -Building our own office premises. -Increasing our field extension team. -Backing up our income generating projects. -Buying more motorcycles for the field extension team. -Developing an offline mobile extension service delivery system. -Opening some branches in other regions. -Engaging exporting companies. -Engaging more banks for agri-business financing for farmers. -Engaging more private sector partners.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
I am a 27 year old social entrepreneur who started my career as a sales agent in 2015 in the Uganda National Renewable Energy Solution program implemented by SNV-Uganda. At that time I was appointed as a Team Leader for my region where I excelled and got awards as Best communicator, Best team leader, Supplier nominated most productive youth, and Best sales person and Best team. Once the project ended in October 2015, I become a hot cake for the companies that were contracted by SNV. It was hard for me to decide the company I should continue working with but I finally chose Green Bio Energy Ltd where I was appointed as a Hub manager. At that very time I was implementing an IFAD funded Vegetable Oil Development Project (VODP2) as a Field extension worker.Due to my outstanding performance, I was promoted to head the VODP2 in my District as a District Technical Supervisor. In the VODP2 project I was nominated and trained by the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries as a gender specialist and a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) trainer. In 2017 I formed and registered a youth organisation, Youth Effort for Sustainable Rural Development (YESRUD) where I am the Executive Director. In January 2020, I won an ward and a donation as Top 4 youth innovators in Uganda organised by USAID-FEED THE FUTURE under the Youth Leadership for Agriculture activity (YLA). Motivation: -Willingness of the farmers to adopt new technologies. -Conducive government policy. -Willingness of private sector partners to join our team. -Presence of entrepreneurship learning centers.
