The project aims to established rural food industries based on Solar Green House Dryers (GHDs) in Nepal. The dehydrated agricultural products (Fruits, Herbs, Vegetables, Cash Crops etc) could sell in national and international market as the proceed and valued dry food products. It not only help to save seasonal agricultural products by wasting because of lack of proper market during harvesting time but also provide easy and cost friendly options for farmers to put their products in value chain process. T Aastha Engineering is collaborating with Covestro Ltd (https://www.covestro.com/), largest polymer manufacturer in the world to manufacture and disseminate Green House Dryers in Nepal. Aastha is also cooperating with various food processing and marketing companies who are buying dry products from farmers. A mobile app connecting farmers and buyers/suppliers will help to get better price for farmers and better quality products for customers.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
At present, the rapidly growing population throughout the world has imposed a huge gap between demand and supply of food. This problem though serious, can be solved either by increasing food supply or by controlling population growth or by both. Apart from these, the most suitable and practical solution may be the reduction in the food losses. One of the ways to do so is to use solar greenhouse drier. Drying is the process that plays an important role in restricting the microorganism growth by reducing the moisture content up to an optimum level. Thus, it is essentially the best way to preserve the agricultural products from spoilage. Solar drying process not only saves the crops but also maintain the original color and taste so as to increase the market value of it. In this process, we implement the drying process of Nepalese crops in green house dryer in various condition and test the various parameter for effective drying process to minimize post harvesting losses. The success will measured in performance of GHDs on various kinds of crops in various geography of Nepal. It will also measured in increase in income generation by individual farmers, increase in useful life of food products and numbers of employment generation in single industry.
Sustainability and future plans
The performance of solar green-house drier is expected to be much higher than open drying. The economic feasibility of the dryer is also expected to be at a very significant level. Aastha Engineering has developed a very cost friendly version of GHDs with its smart control system recently. The company is working with United Nation Climate Development Fund (UNCDF) in Vendor Challenge Scheme. It is targeted to develop at least 30 industries under this program. Alternative Energy Promotion Center (www.aepc.gov.np) is subsidizing this products as the sustainable rural technology. The company is working to rise cash flow either in Lone or Grant form for bigger scale GHDs production in Nepal.

Ms. Kamala Dhakal, M.Sc., Physics, (Date of Birth: 1987) has 10 Years' experience of working in Renewable Energy Technologies in Nepal. She had completed her schooling from a rural village of western Nepal. As a daughter of small land holder farmer, she is well familiar with rural life. After graduation, she decided to work in energy end use based consultancy business and started a company, Aastha Engineering Solution Pvt.ltd., in 2010. Currently, she is directing a startup company, Kinnovation Trading Pvt.Ltd. solely dedicated to trade of green technologies.
