Explain your project in details:
At a time where China has achieved unprecedented economic success and educational growth, a disparity has emerged in the education gap between urban and rural China. Although English is a mandatory core subject required by the Ministry of Education, there is a considerable gap between the facilities offered and quality of teachers of rural communities as opposed to the urban communities. Particularly, there is a lack of textbook materials catered to English education and motivation from teachers to teach primary school students. In this project, we design new Curriculum focusing on improving literacy level that tailored to children in rural China, and help meet the psychological need of left behind children in rural area with our Pen Pal network. Through our project, the initiative would strive to present an understanding of education policy and allow these students to not only have more access to reliable teaching resources but also increase their motivation for learning English, stay healthy while being left behind in rural area of China. Overall we hope this project would empower students to grow their English literacy, making them one step closer to becoming global citizens.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
Education not only aids but empowers individuals to reach their maximum potential in their lives. It starts with the youngest members of our society who will grow up to become the world's next generation. Education can help people break out of a cycle of poverty. Despite a steady growth over the past few years, we are still faced with high non-proficiency levels. In 2015, an estimated 617 million children and adolescents lacked proficiency in reading and math. The "left-behind" children of China are only one of many groups who do not receive a quality education. However, our project can contribute to existing initiatives addressing this issue. By helping this group through our three projects- online English Literacy Curriculum, PEN PAL network and Volunteer Network - we hope to offer more resources, support them mentally and further their learning.
Sustainability and future plans
Our goal is to tackle different aspects affecting the education and mental health of the 'left-behind' children of China. 1. Online Learning Curriculum: In response to COVID-19, we have moved to an online platform. Based on existing material, we have created online video-tutorials on a variety of subjects. These videos will continue to be developed and are easily accessible on our website. 2. Pen Pal Network: PEN PAL Network Separation from migrant parents threatens the mental health of around 61 million left-behind children, and in turn motivation for academic achievements. By creating a PEN PAL network, students can not only improve their English writing skills but also be offered emotional support.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
My name is Victoria Lu, and I am a student from Canada. This initiative was inspired from my research about the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG Goal #4: Quality Education. Reflecting upon my upbringing, I have been fortunate enough to experience a strong education - however, this is not the case for many individuals around the globe. Although this project has just started and our current team is small, I wish to continue to expand this network and help reduce the education gap for the "left-behind" children of China, little be little. In the coming year, I wish to welcome more members to this team and brainstorm innovative strategies to approach this issue. We will continue to solidify our current projects and constantly update the resources in included on our website.
