Accurate medical diagnosis is a crucial skill for all doctors. A wide variety of research studies suggest that breakdowns in the diagnostic process result in a staggering toll of harm and patient deaths. Our proposal aims to innovate the way doctors are trained to perform diagnosis of diseases. The idea is to use voice-enabled Artificial Intelligent chat-bots as patients, covering a wide and easily programmable range of cases. These chat-bots run on cheap single-board computers or are provided as a service through the web in smartphones and desktop computers. The bots interact with doctors or medical students playing scenarios of various diseases, including usual, rare or even misleading cases and prepare students or re-educate (in a lifelong learning process) experienced ones. The doctors interact with the bot as if it is a real patient, they ask questions and get responses. Based on the responses, the doctor asks new questions in order to narrow down a number of possible diseases that the bot-patient has. Finally, the results of each test and of a set of tests can be reviewed and analyzed through a comprehensive web platform. The web platform of MediBot provides all the required mechanisms to design, run, review and analyze differential diagnoses. All the above functions can be easily executed by the doctor without requiring the intervention of a computer programmer or technician. New scenarios and medical protocols can be introduced by the doctor-trainer, without the need of a computer programmer. MediBot is also empowered by a social platform, through which authorized doctors and medical stuff can discuss, share their experiences and upload diagnostic scenarios and protocols. In this way an ever growing diagnosis database is created where the various scenarios can be evaluated and updated by medical personnel all around the world.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
We believe that MEDIBOT is a timely and highly sustainable project in the long run and that it can have a deep effect on future educational systems. This has to do with the application of digitized media and related means for the education of students (of any specialization), enabling the simulation of real-world situations and the familiarization with corresponding best-practices and protocols. Lifelong learning is also an important topic (again of any specialization), considering the speed with which new knowledge is created. Our goals are: Enhance doctors or candidate doctors skills. Our project is an essential tool in a lifelong learning process to ensure excellent diagnostic skills even many years after leaving the medical school, and for diseases that were not fully understood when they started practice. Standardize and at the same time continuously enrich the tests for diagnosis training. This will make possible to have doctors of equal skills independently of their education or practice. This is particular important in less-developed countries. As long as we succeed in having our system adopted by sufficient medical schools and/or individual doctors for self-training, our project will become an important part of the education of doctors throughout their career. The measures to evaluate success are: The number of medical schools all around the world that will use MEDIBOTs services. The number of individual doctors that will consistently use MEDIBOTs services. The contributions and novelties that will arise to medical training through the use of MEDIBOTs platform.
Sustainability and future plans
MEDIBOT will have a huge impact on the way medical students are trained and experienced doctors are re-educated. MEDIBOTs impact is apparent from the range of target groups but also from the importance of disease diagnosis. MEDIBOT is in beta-version. We have developed the web platform where: Tests are managed, diagnosis scenarios are selected, chat-bots are initialized with the scenarios Tests are executed (a doctor interacts with the bot-patient) Results are collected, analyzed and presented to the user through comprehensive data visualization. MEDIBOT has also reached its evaluation milestone and can be used by doctors or students. A number of experienced doctors are currently testing it and share with us their feedback. The next steps are: Enrich the diagnosis database with the help of doctors from various specializations (within the next 3 months). Refine and optimize the web platform (within the next 3 months). Make the web platform available online for everyone (within the next 4 months). Contact the Greek Medical Association and major Medical schools to use our system in the real world and receive significant feedback (within the next 6 months). Further refine our whole framework based on the received feedback (within the next 9 months). Promote our system to the rest of the world (within the next 12 months). MEDIBOT targets: medical schools all around the world that will use its services for training and evaluation of their doctors. hospitals that require their doctors to be certified and educated on the latest diagnosis scenarios. individual doctors that are interested to be certified and educated on the latest differential diagnosis scenarios but also to interact with other doctors. medical firms interested in analyzing the knowledge enclosed in MEDIBOT.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
Anastasis Varvarigos is 17 years old and is a student in the third grade of upper secondary school, who loves computers and biology and is equally passionate about both engineering and medicine. He has won the second prize at the 78th, the third prize at the 79th and the second prize at the 80th national Panhellenic student mathematics competition Euclid of the Greek mathematic society. Motivated by family experiences, he had the idea to combine these two disciplines in Medibot, in order to ultimately improve the quality of life of other people. In the past he has participated in the development of an innovative business idea, the kudos, which are voice enabled chatbots that target to make the life of all the people of a city easier by enabling near real life conversation between the chatbot and a person providing certain useful information such as the timetable of a bus, or navigation details for a museum. He is also very fond of robotics but also of politics while participating in many MUN conferences all around the globe.
