Hemp Homes On Your Own
Explain your idea in details:
Poverty is one of the biggest problems in India and the world. It is my belief that if we tackle the problem of employment and education first, poverty will itself reduce. My idea aims to help those who can't find employment and must live in poverty by not only providing them jobs, but providing them work that will directly benefit them and hence the country. "Hemp Homes On Your Own" employs the use of a plant, not very well-known, but extremely useful-Hemp. Hemp can be used to make 50,000 alternative products for those we use today. Not only are hemp products strong, better quality and durable; but also they are cleaner sources meaning the cultivation of hemp itself is more eco-friendly. Hemp produces 4 times more oxygen, absorbs more Carbon dioxide, produces more fuel and saves more water than normal forest trees. Through "Hemp Homes On Your Own", people will be provided with various employment opportunities such as farmers for cultivation, engineering and research scientists to improve this cultivation, manufacturers to process the hemp into usable fibre, workers in various industries of hemp products, and finally builders to build their homes out of hempcrete. Further, more jobs can be created in other fields related to hemp products. Not only will this enable people to work for making their own homes, but also enable them to contribute to the environment by introducing eco friendly alternatives that do not pollute Earth. This approach also requires for people in the community to understand that they can only prosper when they work with and for each other to build, make resources and keep their surroundings clean and healthy.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Through this project, I target to provide employment and homes to the poor in villages in India as well as slums of cities. Further, hemp homes can be used for making homes for others so as to make a more eco-friendly environment. Success of this idea can be measured by the effectiveness of the cycle in any community. For example, to ensure that the system works, first the cultivation of an adequate amount of good quality hemp is required by the farmers of the region. Then the hemp, upon maturation, needs to be harvested and sent to a processing factory where its fibres are extracted from the stalk and processed to a usable form. From here the hemp can be sent not only to a factory where hempcrete for building is made, but also to factories for making hemp bio-plastics, hemp clothes, hemp paper, and so much more. This shows the multi uses of hemp ad how it can provide so much more employment in other fields of production. After the hemp is made into brick of hempcrete (like concrete made from hemp for building), it can then be used by masons to construct homes, schools, hospitals, etc in the community. By introducing eco-friendly and biodegradable alternatives in the market, slowly the demand will rise and hence these products can be made available to everyone at affordable costs. It can eventually change our plastic-dependant community to one which is better for sustainable development of the environment and its people.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
This project will definitely require the assistance of the government, sponsors, influential people, and people willing to volunteer and make contributions to the community and country. In the initial stages, capital will be required to purchase materials and resources. It will require the help of influential people to persuade people in villages to partake in this project and show them how it is beneficial for them and the community. Many people may feel that if they start working to build their own homes then they will be unable to get even some money which is required for food and their childrens education. Thus, this idea will also require the help of volunteer organisations and the government to set up services for food and education accessible to all the people so that there is more incentive to work. Once the cycle starts running, it is possible for people to work independently in factories and production of hemp, hempcrete, and other hemp products.
Hi. My name is Anmol Gupta and I am 17 years old. Im a senior in highschool and deeply passionate about contributing to the community and changing the world for the better. I live in India and growing up, Ive seen countless people on the streets, living in make-shift homes, and living jobless in poverty. My will to change this and make the world better, not only for the poor, but also for the Earth, is the source of motivation for this idea. Science has always played a major role in my life and I love using science and knowledge to bring change. Im greatly determined to give back to the community and make a healthier planet for all of us to live in. Change and service is very important to me, having been a part of my schools Interact club (Rotary International) for the last 4 years and even serving as its director last year. Together, we have worked in multiple blood donation camps, donation drives, and awareness movements. This has really motivated me to use my own knowledge and creativity to find solutions to major problems in our society. Education is very important for the development of the country and having been awarded an All India Rank 3 in the CBSE board exams, I have first hand experience how education motivates you to do better for yourself and the community. I identified that most of the poor in India do not send their kids to school (in spite of the services provided by the government) because of the need for more working people to earn more money, and hence afford food and shelter. This led to the development of the idea Hemp Homes on Your Own, which will help to provide employment, homes and a clean Earth.
