Explain your idea in details:
The people whose livelihood depends on the ocean are faced with problems such as not much marine life which would cause them to move away. The people who clean the ocean face problems with coming back to see no progress. Humankind sees a food chain imbalance as there are a lot of seafood eating people as well. There are many ways plastic is affecting us but only some reach out to help. My proposed solution includes these features: An affordable and effective automated machine That can collect plastic and other debris in a short time, Separate the plastic from the rest and compress plastic so it would be easier to transport it, The machine will also be - Solar powered containing a sonar System consisting of a GPS system so the user can track the machine and the machine can come back to a certain point after a while.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The machine will ensure : - There will be no food chain imbalance - cleanliness of the ocean - Increase in Jobs -The usage of plastic is a better way Questions and Answers 1) How will the separation of plastic be done within the machine? Ans) The technique, called magnetic density sorting, consists of passing the plastic waste through a tank with a suspension of 5-nano metre iron oxide nano particles, placed on top of a magnet. The iron oxide nano particles separate the plastic and debris into different layers, so it becomes easier for the machine to separate plastic and other debris 2) What will the plastic be recycled into? As I have progressed in research I have found out only 9% of plastic can be reused into making daily use products such as bricks but the remaining plastic will be used to produce petrol and diesel . It can also be sent to boilers to be made into electricity. 3) What will happen to the seaweed that gets collected as derbries? Ans) If seaweed is collected it is highly suitable to be used as bio fuel.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
My idea has two phases to it. Phase 1 - Train with three compartments with a ramp and a moving belt attached to the front to collect plastic - There will be sensors all around it and an camera - Only bio fuel will be used and a sonar system will be added - The first compartment will collect the plastic and separate the debries, - The second compartment will compress all the plastic - The third compartment will be used to store the plastic until it is unloaded Second Phase - A submarine that is going to go underwater. - The submarine will have hands take plastic which is inside the ocean. - It will have cameras as well as sensors. - It will run on bio fuel - In this machine all the plastic will be collected and then taken to the machine in phase 1
I am 13 years old and I have been working on this project for almost 9 months now. The reason I came up with this idea is because my School had started CBL (Challenge Based Learning) where I had to come up with an unique idea that would solve a problem that the world is facing. I mostly succeeded because of my interest in research and marine life along with support from family and friends. I got motivated to continue the project after reading a book about why tough times Never Last but Tough People do by Robert H. Schuller
