FiloWeaves- preserving indigenous and providing decent work to local weavers

Published on July 12, 2021 um 11:01

Explain your idea in details:

In short, the main objective of FiloWeaves is to provide a means for living to weavers and to preserve the diverse indigenous culture in the Philippines through textile products. There would be three product collections, one for a different type of weaving technique and style: Pinilian, which places its origins in the Ilocos region, Bontoc, which places its origins in the Bontoc Mountain Province, and Kalinga, which places its origins in the Kalinga province. Products range from floor mats to clothes, and each collection features design that is unique to the province it is based on. To ensure alignment with the distinct features of weaves unique to their respective regions, FiloWeaves will make sure that weave collections from a specific region will be weaved by weavers from said region.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

The expected impact of FiloWeaves is to provide decent work for weavers and to encourage economic growth in the areas that they live in (usually in the provinces). In addition to providing viable means of living for "veteran" weavers, FiloWeaves would also provide means of living to otherwise jobless individuals through teaching various weaving techniques. Weaving lessons will be taught by the "veteran" weavers already under FiloWeaves' employment, offering more opportunities for economic prosperity to said veteran weavers.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

Although FiloWeaves will have a clothing line, most of the products will be based around "one size fits all". This will allow the business model to be based around online retailing. In the Philippines, the FiloWeaves products would be sold on Lazada, which is essentially the Amazon of the Philippines. On a global scale, assuming that FiloWeaves does become successful enough to expand abroad, the products would be sold on Amazon. In the beginning, I predict that it will be difficult for FiloWeaves to find investors. Holding a realistic view is something that I find to be important. Starting off wouldn't be a problem since online retailing is relatively easy to do(although the "success" part varies from person to person). As the products gain traction and start to generate significant revenue, investors will eventually see the merit in such a business.

Your profile

I am 15 years old and I am South Korean. I currently live in the Philippines, which is the main reason why I came up with FiloWeaves. The idea of becoming an entrepreneur is something that I have thought about for quite some time. I learned about indigenous cultures in AP Human Geography and thought that FiloWeaves could be a viable solution to preserving indigenous culture in the Philippines.
