Explain your idea in details:
In Nigeria, more than 45 million people live on less than US$ 2 a day and depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. This high proportion of population exposed to the vagaries of weather patterns that have ruinous consequences on their livelihoods. Aside from these challenges, the financial difficulties experience by farmers especially smallholder farmers after a bad crop year also weakens farmers ability to buy farm inputs required to maximize their crop yields and profitability. Dehmis Global Services aim to provide risk management solutions for smallholder farmers through bundling farm input with credit facility and micro-insurance for climate resilient food system. Our goal is to offer direct delivery of farm inputs, credit facility on farm Input and link smallholder farmers to local insurers and other agricultural insurance value chain. This will help many smallholder Nigerian farmers to easily access insurance to protect their crops and livelihoods. Our solution is designed to be a result-based implementation that entails four pillars; First, we provide access to drought-tolerant (DT) crop varieties (seeds) and high value seeds will enable smallholder farmers in turn to have a better adaptation to the changing climates. Second, we offer farm input credit. This credit is designed for smallholder farmers who wish to grow crops using improved inputs, thus the credit has to cover seed or fertilizer. Farmers will purchase this package with insurance premium during the planting season to start coverage against drought and help them to pay back credit at harvest. Third, we offer reimbursement to farmers who suffer loss in the event of dry spells during the planting season. In this case we compensate farmers with exact value of premium on inputs. This is only available for seeds. Finally, we act as an intermediary between insurance companies and smallholder farmers. We help farmers to facilitate affordable and accessible agricultural insurance.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Our aim is to protect smallholder farmers against climate vulnerabilities and financial difficulties which will help to improve food security and quality of life, resulting to; No poverty, Zero hunger and Good health and well being. We plan to reach approximately 5,000 smallholder farmers to receive farm inputs credit with flexible repayment plan within the one year of pilot program. The pilot is targeted at three local governments in each senatorial district of Ogun state Nigeria. By the end of the pilot program, in next two years, we intend to scale significantly within Southwest states of Nigeria targeting 75,000 smallholder farmers with the provisions of farm input, credit facility on input and micro- insurance products. Within 5years we replicate the process across all Geo-political zones in Nigeria. This will impact a number of smallholder farming households in Nigeria. We are projecting a feedback that will show over 75% improvement in crop yields. Our growth plan call for hiring new staffs, building staff competencies and investing in digital smart tools such as novel sensor technology, drones, satellite imaging for precision agriculture. This will position our business to better serve our farmers and scale better faster.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Our business model is based on the following: Direct delivery of farm input using dispatch delivery service. One-stop farmers shop where farmers can access input and receive technical support. End to end services that will enable farmers to access better farming knowledge via training, agro-insurance education and market information. Our sustainability is based on the trust we build through our solution. Currently, we are generating little revenue through extension services offered to our farmers. We foresee 45% annual revenue growth. The revenue stream will come from sales of farm inputs, premium from reimbursement plan, Insurance agent commission and consultancy fees We are raising funds to fully implement all our solutions, raising $250,000 will help us to grow our revenue, reach more communities and states in Nigeria. We are looking for a seed-funded startup and equity to fund our solution in order to cover operating and overhead cost. We also need technical support to grow exponentially. We are young team members with experience and agro-business background but the experience of senior colleagues in the field and mentors will be exceptional to increase our competencies.
