"DropLit" - Virtual Interactive platform that incentivizes water saving
Published on August 27, 2021 um 09:18
Explain your idea in details:
Our goal is to encourage saving water through creating a virtual platform that not only makes saving water fun and competitive but also serves as a constant reminder to its users of their water usage. DropLit is a platform that tracks and displays the water usage of individual households who voluntarily sign up. This water usage data can acquired through partnering up with major utilities companies and can then be compared to the users water usage in previous months to remind the users whether his/her water consumption has gone up or down and the data can also be used to calculate and predict water bills to constantly remind the users of the cost of their water consumption. These two features serve to incentivize water saving via behavioral psychology such as the sense of achievement felt by a user after seeing his/her water consumption improve as well as being constantly reminded of the cost of their consumption. Most importantly, any users data on their water usage will be visible to other users as well which allows users to compete with each other. This competition will be in the form of leader boards that can be local, provincial, and national, thus encouraging water saving through peer pressure. However, if an user is uncomfortable with sharing their data, there is an option to keep the water usage data private or only visible to selected individuals. We believe DropLit will make saving water more fun and exciting, and virtual items, discount coupons from sponsor companies, and more rewards will be incorporated to serve as extra incentives. Furthermore, through partnering up with major utilities companies, the platform will also allow water bills to be paid conveniently through this app which is likely to attract more users.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The UN Sustainable development goal this project targets is the 12th which is responsible consumption and production. Droplit aims to promote more sustainable and responsible consumption of water. We estimate that the users of our app will be more conscious of their water consumption thus becoming more responsible consumers of natural resources like water. The impact and success of DropLit can be easily measured by analyzing the water usage data from users and comparing them to the water usage data of non-users who serve as control variables. An astonishing amount of water is wasted everyday in Canada, the country I currently reside, but water waste is also a huge problem world wide and we believe DropLit will make a positive impact on the environment and mitigate this issue.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
As stated earlier, acquiring water usage data is an essential aspect of DropLit and we plan to achieve it by partnering up with major utilities companies such as BC Hydro in Canada. The major financing source of DropLit is revenue from advertisement generated from displaying ads on the platform from companies. Also, DropLit can charge a small convenience fee to users who choose to pay their water bills through our app. Regarding collaborations, DropLit can collaborate with other companies where discount coupons from these companies may be used as rewards to water saving.
My name is Kai Lu and Im 18 years old. I recently graduated from high school in Vancouver, Canada and I will be attending the University of Toronto Rotman school of Commerce this September. My passion for business originated from a company I co-founded in grade 11, through the JABC company program in which my team won the Company of the year, aimed at reducing paper waste through selling notebooks made with a special erasable material. I recently developed a keen interest in public policy from several programs I attended over the summer regarding the UN as well as research on demographics and environment-related issues such as fertility, wealth inequality, and pollution. My passions for these two areas and my aspiration to make a positive impact on society motivated me to participate in this contest. My non-academic interests include basketball, skiing, theatre, and debating.
