Cat Rescue-Give each cat an "ID card."
Published on August 27, 2021 um 09:16
Explain your idea in details:
The increasing population of stray cats is a long lasting problem that faces many large and small cities in US. On the one hand, countless stray cats live a life of helplessness and starvation. One the other hands, they are predators of birds and small mammals which put local ecosystem under threat. Therefore, more and more agencies are paying attention to controlling the population and improving living conditions of stray cats. For instance, people in US commonly use "cut ears" to distinguish whether cats are neutered or not. However, the information exchange for stray cats is very scarce, i.e. many neutered kittens are sent to vet repeatedly to be neutered. In addition, other key information such as health conditions are not shared sufficiently for people to take effective actions. This project aims to establish a cat rescue website, which will publicize the information of stray cats, including but not limited to: appearance characteristics, physical conditions, neutering history, etc. The website will assign a life-long ID card to each stray cat through facial recognition related technology. When users meet a stray cat, they can quickly upload photos of the stray cat to the website and the website will determine whether it is on file by image recognition technologies. If it is a new cat, the users will be asked to create a profile for it. Otherwise, users can browse the existing information of this cat and modify or add new information as they want. This project uses frontier image recognition technology to synthesize stray cat information and therefore is able to 1) help rescuers efficiently identify and obtain the most up-to-date information of stray cats; 2) help adopters quickly find their favorite types ang give stray cats a home.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
This project proposes an innovative method to compile stray cat information in a synthesized and effective way using image recognition technology. It has great impacts on sustainable development of local communities in two aspects. First, this website will reduce labor, medical and financial costs on rescuing and neutering stray cats. A current model of stray cats rescue often involves a lot of unnecessarily repeated work by different agencies. For instance, different organizations or agencies may survey the same area or same cats at different time because the information are not shared. In other cases, a stray cat may be caught and sent to hospital repeatedly for vaccine or neutering because people don't know its medical history. As our project created a platform where information of stray cats can be easily accessed, compiled, added and modified, it will lead to much more efficient usages of resources. Second, our project will enhance the ecosystem of local communities by controlling the population of stray cats and providing stray cats a better living condition. As the human, medical and financial resources are allocated more effectively, we will have better control of cat population by neutering them and take better care of their health conditions. This is not only beneficial to stray cats but also other creatures including human being ourselves.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
1. Funding Sources: Funds are majorly obtained from donations from individuals, organizations and communities. The funds will be used in the promotion and maintenance of the website and covering the cost of collecting vagrant and confirming information in the field. 2. Publicity: We will promoting our website through online media, animal associations, veterinary hospitals. 3. Team/management :The project team members are mainly divided into three categories: field information collectors who mainly carry out statistics and information confirmation of stray cats in various communities; online website operators, mainly in charge of website information maintenance, cat information changes, etc.; and the coordination team to make all parts connected. 4. Project Operation: 1) Offline information collection: We will regularly recruit local volunteers to survey the local stray cats and ask them to build or update profiles for them in our website. Information we need includes whether or not they are neutered, newborn cats, if there are injuries, whether the newborn kittens will look for adoption, etc. 2) Online platform maintenance: To ensure a smooth user experience, the website will be regularly monitored and improved to accommodate the visiting traffic and reflect users feedback. Also some basic statistics of stray cats will also be summarized and accessible on the website to provide a big picture view. 3) Coordination of different department and operations: coordination team will work on connecting external donations, stray cat adoption and other matters, which is of great significance to the successful operation of the project.
I am a 17 year-old high school student from Interlake High School US. During my spare time, I love to spend time on animals and associated charity work. I myself have 6 cats at home. I am also the chairman of the Stray Animals Association and a member of schools Animal Protection Association. In the past three years, I have come into contact with a large number of stray animals, and also communicated with stray cats of different identities. I found that there are serious shortages of human resources as well as a great waste of human resources when it comes to rescuing stray cats. This is difficult to solve and very depressing. Therefore, after interviewing a large number of stray animal rescuers, medical staff and animal adopters, I discussed with my friends the measures to solve this problem and we decided to establish a "stray animal ID card" system for effectively allocating our limited resources. I have always believed that maximizing the power of kind people is the right direction for solving stray cat problems.
