Explain your idea in details:
The project represents an innovative solution for the treatment of patients subject to motor deficits of one or more tissues innervated by cranial nerves. The device will replace the nerve locally, producing the physiological response that the nerve itself would induce if it were not damaged. The purpose of the device is to maximize the recovery of facial function by using the healthy counterparts of the same patient.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Our project identifies an extended catchment area among those affected by Bell's palsy, post-stroke palsy and forms of paralysis resulting from trauma or infection. Market estimates from epidemiological studies alone identify an annual catchment area of about half a million Bell's disease sufferers in the U.S. alone and about one million stroke survivors worldwide. Our idea is to propose the device to this target of patients for whom the health expenses only for the treatment of symptoms related to paresis are around tens of millions of dollars per year.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The development phase involves the development of specific activities conducted partly internally and partly externally, thanks to relationships established with a network of technology partners such as specialized suppliers of materials and components, engineering services, prototyping, and experimental testing as well as in-vivo testing centers and universities. These activities will consist of numerical simulations, in-vitro tests (physical-chemical tests), and in-vivo tests (implantation tests on experimental models), whose results will contribute to consolidating unique proprietary know-how on the current market, and have, as a whole, the objective to complete the optimization of the device design and to establish its technical specifications.
We are a couple of young inventors of 22 and 24 years old, a medicine student and a mechanical engineer who talking about cranial nerves after an anatomy lesson thought: "How is it possible to restore the physiology of areas of the face that are unresponsive due to a nerve deficit". Starting from this simple question we started focusing on how many people around the world would benefit from such a device, especially concerning the importance of non-verbal communication in everybody's daily lives. Our wish is to create a device accessible to whoever needs it, in order to help people affected by facial paralysis to overcome pain and social barriers. This is what drives our dream and we are currently trying to archive our goal step by step: we started in June 2021 through the deposit of our patent to the Italian national office and currently, we are taking part in many national and international competitions
