Explain your idea in details:
Global energy demand will increase by a third through 2040, mainly due to increased consumption in transportation in China, India, and parts of Asia. The emerging global population causes more greenhouses gases to be emitted due to non-renewable energy. According to the 2019 Annual Energy Outlook, global GDP growth from 2017 to 2040 with the expectation of an average of 3.4%. As the demand for water increases, the availability of water decreases due to diminishing resources. Floods and storms concerning human losses account for 18% and 39% of disaster-related deaths from 1970 to 2019, respectively. In terms of economic losses, 54% were associated with storms, while different types of floods account for 31%. By 2050, many more countries will face less availability of surface water resources. The water requirement should not exceed the availability of water. In 2050, that number will increase from 42 to 95% or 2.7 to 3.2 billion people. From the early to mid-2010s, 1.9 billion people, or 27% of the global population, living in potentially severely arid areas. 2.2 billion humans presently do not have the right of entry to securely controlled ingesting water, and 4.2 billion, or 55% of the global population, are without thoroughly supervised sanitation. As Earths climate has warmed, there is a sustained rise in the numbers of floods and storms due to discharged greenhouse gases emission. Climate change has affected the obtainability, standard, and amount of water needed to meet human necessities. Tree-like Street Light created to solve these problems. The piping system under the street light is organized and distributed around the area. This creation also provides a new renewable energy source by generation electricity from the flow of water through the micro-hydro turbine under each street light. Excess water also will be treated and stored in the underground tank.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
As flooding becomes more common and serve, Tree-like Street lights come out to solve this problem. With Tree-like Street Lights, flooding is risk controlled with its excellent and organized water system. Tree-like Street Light is suitable to be installed in a community as this can provide many benefits to the community due to ease to control of the water system. Next, Tree-like Street Light can promote security in urban areas and increase the quality of life by artificially extending the hours in which it is light so that activity can take place. This Street lighting also improves safety for drivers, riders, and pedestrians using solar power to operate it. The funnel-shaped street light reduces light pollution at night. LEDs used in street lights can save more energy than incandescent bulbs because diode light is much more efficient, power-wise, than filament light. LED bulbs consume more than 75% less energy than incandescent lighting. The product also provides a new renewable energy source by generating electricity from the flow of the water. The electricity generated with a micro-hydro turbine operates a nearby water treatment system and reserve osmosis system. It also can improve urban greening as there will be plants seeded on the part of orbeez on the street light. Lastly, Tree-like Street Light can solve water scarcity by collecting water to send to underground water storage tanks. At the same time, the excess water collected during a flood will flow to ponds, rivers, or even underground to recharging the groundwater supply. The treated water that has gone through reverse osmosis will be used or drank by the residents to solve water scarcity. The residents will drink recycled water from reserve osmosis. We believe that our creation, city, and towns will act as an artificial forest.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Now, we will do experiment in the lab to get a more accurate data and try to modify it to have better efficiency. We will try to use now available device to be set in the system such as micro-hydro turbine and solar panel. Due to the pandemic, we still cannot do the experiment until December. In the next phase, we will promote this idea to companies and try to convince them with our data and presentation.
I am now a junior in Bachelor of Civil Engineering. I have used this idea to participate many competitions to be recognized by many companies and intuitions. Along the competitions, I try to modify this idea due to my experiments and advices from my professors. Since my first time watched Nat Geo Wild, I know I fall interested in the beauty and mysterious of the nature. I try to participated more Sustainable Goal Development Challenges or Competitions to improve my knowledges and experiences. Until now, I just got gold award in SICEX USM 2021 Competition and silver award in I2creaTE 2021 which both are international competition that organized in Malaysia. I still not satisfied with myself thus I try to create more ideas regarding sustainability during this semester break. This idea come out when I participating SICEX USM 2021 which had the theme of Archiving zero-flood in our nation. I hope to create an creation that has the concept of biomimicry and can provide a sustainable and renewable energy sources and the idea Tree-like Street Light has come out.
