Explain your idea in details:
THE PROBLEM The African controlled medication market is worth about USD5.4 billion, with an annual growth rate of 7.1% (UN report on drug use, 2017). Africa has the youngest population of under 25 years and the highest consumers of controlled medications in the world. The lack of due diligence to ensure the dignity of the distribution chain, as well as weak regulations, have led to unauthorized distribution through illicit channels to open market traders with little or no public health consequences. The outcome is an outright abuse of controlled medications for non-medical purposes and increased use for crime and related purposes.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The focus of my is to design a supply chain strategy using a platform that can accommodate only licensed pharmacies and hospitals, thereby excluding all unlicensed vendors. With this in place, the regulatory agencies can easily track all transactions, enabling them to know the movement of the controlled medication, preventing drug abuse.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Implementing this project required collaboration between the regulating agencies, the pharmacy bodies and hospitals across Africa.
I am 37 years old and my proficiency stems from eight years as a senior medical representative, promoting controlled medications in tertiary medical institutions. It provided me with a first-hand insight into the gaps that lead to the rising incidence of drug abuse. Also, there are very few and poorly equipped rehabilitation centers across Africa that take care of the rising incidence of controlled medication abuse among the large young population. In addition, as a CEO of a pharmaceutical distribution company in Nigeria, with an MBA in pharmaceutical management and an M.Sc in digital entrepreneurship from the UK, I got the required skills needed to develop a digital solution. Pharmili was designed with some unique features such as an integrative cloud based platform, built to promote transparency and accountability. It is prioritized to focus on strengthening regulations and uniquely designed to exclude unlicensed stores. It is also uniquely coded for user safety and data privacy.
