Sanitation Bank: Hygienic Initiative in Western Area Urban Slums
Explain your idea in details:
This proposal aims to establish a Social Enterprise to tackle sanitation poverty through increased access to and use of improved sanitation in the Freetown municipality, Sierra Leone. The goal of the project is to improve access to basic sanitation as well as improving the quality of the environment and water bodies in the Western Region slum communities by providing quality toilets, hygiene campaigns, and waste management services. Objectives: 1) to alleviate hygiene poverty; to reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases (like cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, etc.); construct high quality, low cost toilets ACTIVITIES: 1) Identity and recruit engineering/ technical team 2) Toilets sites and specifications are confirmed in collaboration with the engineers; 3) Build the toilets and structures 4) Install the prefabricated toilets structures and conduct quality checks OUR APPROACH: Building toilets alone has failed in tackling the problem of sanitation in developing countries. Most often, project are focused on product/service availability and neglecting behavioural change. Our approach is customer-centric with tailored messages to overturn residents attitudes toward human and environmental wellbeing. Our campaign messages will go hand in hand with our toilets installation and other sanitation services. Until residents accept the negative consequences of open defecation and poor hygiene our efforts to improve sanitation will be less impactful to them.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
In addition to the health implications of living in a decent, healthy environment and ideal hygiene routines, the mental wellbeing impact of being clean and healthy as a result of living in a clean environment is massive. Some of the key impacts include: 1. Transformed the hygiene and wellbeing of residents through accessible, affordable standard sustainable toilets and sanitation services. 2. Inclusive health information and access to sanitation services to better help marginalized Households and communities protect themselves and their families. 3. More sustainable jobs are created to reduce the incidence of unemployment among the youth and women 4. Environmental protection and sustainability is ensured by reducing the impacts of human waste into the ocean. 5. Restored dignity for the aged, the physically challenged and security for women and girls is guaranteed as they will have total privacy of their personal hygiene.

My name is Santigie Uthman Kalokoh, and I am looking forward to receiving a grant for my Sanitation Bank Project at Entrepreneurship Campus. I am 37 years old. Since I graduated from university, I have been working toward the goal of having a career in the private sector [NGO and Development] industry and helping deprived communities attain their goals alongside the UN Sustainable Development Goals. My background in Public Administration and Management from University of Makeni backed by my five years experience of graduate entrepreneurship programmes, Lean Startup Management Principles, Adaptive Leadership and Business Models for Social Enterprises give me an edge that can make this idea a big success once kick started. Since 2016 , I have cofounded four grassroot organizations of which three are fully operational now. I have a also founded the Foresight Organic Poultry Farm, a backyard poultry farm that specializes in raising local chickens mainly for meat, and there are plans to transform it into a Commercial Poultry Company by early 2023 to incorporate exotic chicken breeds. I have the experience managing projects with over $30,000 funding while working at Youth Arise for Rural Development, Empowerment and Peace Building. In recognition of my good work at YARDEPB, I have been honoured serving as a member of its Board of Trustees. Moreover, my background in community development projects and human rights advocacy have advanced my understanding of the day-to-day living status of the less privileged. Of course this also gives me better footings on relationship building (Networking and partnerships) at all stakeholders categories. I am certain that running a project of similar nature will be an added advantage for the new company.
