I am a co-founder in Desert Date Co,we are building vertically integrated company. We are creating luxurious skin care products under Brand name of Lope Tree. Our key objectives are 1: To create employment for women and girls in my community 2- To protect and conserve the desert date trees. 3: To build a viable social enterprise with huge impact to the communities. Being Vertically integrated company we source the nuts our selves which is being done by 80 women and girls. We open the hard nuts manually by hand,sort it clean by hand and finally press desert date oil. The oil is formulated in to different skin care products under Lope tree. Unlike Fair trade model which pays primary producers for the raw materials,we aim to pay the primary producers on the dividends they get from sale of each brand. We call this Wealth Trade. This is completely a new model and the real potential of primary producers building wealth as opposed to Fair trade model which keeps them in stagnant poverty.

Most of our workers are women and girls, about 80 people. This women currently do petty businesses like alcohol brewing and charcoal selling and they could not send their children to school nor get adquate medical treatment incase of sickness. Through our model these women will be able to save money and send their children to school and stop cutting down the trees for charcoal since money from the Lope Tree brands far exceeds the one from the petty businesses. If 10% of brands sign up to our new model we believe this will be real game changer. We shall monitor our impact by number of children enrolling in schools as well as the percentage of desert date trees being protected and conserved.

We creating a new model call Wealth Trade, these will be implemented through Savings and Credit Cooperatives (Sacco). Primary producers will earn dividends from the sell of retail brands which money will keep accumulating in their Sacco. We shall source for Investors who align with our mission as well as collaborating with FairWild certification, Ecocert and Fair trade.

I am a graduate of Bsc Forestry with multiple certificates in Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development Projects. Adult Ugandan born of 1977. Being an avid researcher, I have realized that the current Fair trade model can't change the situation of primary producers. We are now more motivated in creating this new Wealth Trade model. I have been a chairperson of Savings and Credit Cooperatives in my District and based on my huge experience,am convinced this model will be a success. I have worked with both government and International NGO as well as leading many advocacy groups in Northern Uganda where this model will be tested.
