A costume made of a mask
Explain your idea in details:
The reason why I came up with this idea is because I'm aware of the seriousness of what's happening. Masks are the most basic quarantine tools to protect against infectious diseases and prevent infection. People wear masks and protect their lives, but paradoxically, wild animals are severely damaged by discarded masks. Ocean Asia, an environmental marine organization, said more than 1.6 billion disposable masks flowed into the sea in 2020. Whales or turtles can swallow floating masks by mistaking them for food. Also, masks take 450 years to decompose. After I saw these facts,I thought I should recycle the masks. I was inspired by a TCG company that made chairs using masks. TCG, an eco-friendly small and medium-sized company in Wales, England, is using TCP to target not only masks but also all COVID-19 protective equipment. TCP is a mask in a specially manufactured container that heats various protective equipment such as vinyl and curtains for more than 25 minutes and more than 3,000 degrees. Do you think, "Wouldn't it be unhygienic to make clothes out of masks that people use?" Not only COVID-19, but also the strongest anthrax among bacteria disappears completely during the heating process, so there is no problem with hygiene. It will be able to communicate these skills to people, teach and disseminate them to skilled technicians, create various clothing frames, and make clean and diverse clothes for people to wear.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
If I realize my idea, I can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save energy resources. And because masks are used again, the amount of masks entering the sea will be reduced, which will be effective in protecting marine life. Plastic is the main material for masks with overlapping filters to prevent viruses. This is, after all, a kind of plastic. Plastic not only emits harmful substances such as dioxin designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a first-class carcinogen, but also generates greenhouse gases that cause global warming. Recycling these masks can reduce harmful substances and greenhouse gas emissions. Even if you try to make and sell clothes with masks, you don't have to worry about situations where people won't buy clothes. Brands that sell eco-friendly products improve their corporate image, and those who are interested in the environment and MZ generation tend to open their wallets to eco-friendly, so there are no commercial problems. For example, North Face has gained huge popularity by launching eco-friendly products, and the company has more than doubled its output compared to 2019. In 2020, North Face released more than 10 million PET bottles for the fall and winter seasons. Sixty PET bottles were used per North Face Fleece, which reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 67 percent and saved energy resources by about 59 percent. Furthermore, I think I can use the mask I used to protect the environment again, so I can consume and produce it responsibly.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
In the process of planning this idea, I found that there are many companies that develop and make eco-friendly products. So I think companies will be interested in this idea. To realize my idea, I need to figure out how masks can make clothes, like making new clothes out of plastic bottles using mechanical regeneration methods that cut and compress plastic bottles. So first, I have to contact the TCG company that inspired me by making a chair using a mask. Companies should learn TCP technology to make chairs without melting molds even after heating them to 3,000 degrees after contact. Companies that have encountered this technology will recognize that they can make clothes out of masks, just as there is a way to recycle plastic bottles again. And just as there are many ways to recycle plastic, companies will study to find more ways to make masks. Companies will be able to research and develop various technologies and make various clothes.
I am a Korean and I am a 17-year-old girl. I learned the importance of small life from growing up with my dog since I was young. I learned the importance of life and naturally became interested in the animal ecosystem, so I often watched news about animals. I learned about UN SDGs through my high school class. As I learned this in depth, I realized that many people are interested in the environment and seriousness.
