Make unpaid work pays off

Stage of Idea conceptual stage, planning stage

Explain your idea in details:

During the Covid-19 pandemic everyone works from home, an article written by an outstanding female scientist shows her life fulfilled by all kinds of unpaid work. As a result, her research time was highly compressed, but the same thing didn't happen to male scientists. This phenomenon exists on a global scale no matter in developed or developing countries, women scientists or housewives. According to UN "Unpaid care and domestic work is valued to be 10 and 39 percent of the Gross Domestic Product and can contribute more to the economy than the manufacturing, commerce or transportation sectors". Thus, I want to design an app to make unpaid work counted and profitable. There are many union services to alleviate household work for women, and I want to design an app to digitalize the process. The app can track the availability of union services for users to make appointments efficiently. Also, women who aren't able to access paid work can apply to do unpaid work anytime on this app to gain a salary which creates loads of work positions to help women in harsh conditions. Every user can upload their unpaid work length for a better calculation, and the app will automate and shows the value of the amount of unpaid work to raise people's awareness about the large capacity and economical significance of unpaid work.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

My goal is to gradually realize the count of unpaid work length worldwide to eventually implement the unpaid work calculation in GDP. In supplement, in virtue of the establishment of union service that helps alleviate unpaid work of women, we can collaborate together to improve service efficiency and most importantly create job opportunities to empower women. In the end, I hope the App can promote unpaid work to be properly calculated to GDP in every corner of the world, and the vitality of women's unpaid work can be loudly heard. Thus, to improve gender equality and global economic growth.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

Firstly, we will search for close mutual collaboration with Union Nations to help them better run their union services established, especially in developing countries that have a more severe situation in the unequal allocation of unpaid work. After the App has gained the first round of users, we will continue to spread deeper and wider. To expand collaboration with governments, NGOs, and private companies. As a charity program, we are welcome to accept donations from all walks of life. But eventually, the traffic, data collected and job opportunities created on the app will help to achieve self-profit while helping women gain a salary from unpaid work.

Your profile

I am 18 years old from a very small city in southwestern China and eventually ended up enrolled in New York University majoring in Economics. The experience of breaking stereotypes and thriving to be a female leader broadened my insight and raised my awareness of gender equality. Born and raised in a conventional family, I have witnessed how my grandmothers were "naturally" assigned to undertake most of the housework based on toxic social norms. I am very fortunate that I am encouraged to pursue my dream without bearing the chains of being a woman. However, I choose to pay attention to the predicaments of women in all conditions, especially unpaid work which is frequently ignored but contains significance in gender equality. As an economics student, I firmly believe in the power of financial empowerment for women. Thus, I want to use my own strength to achieve the goal and call out for public attention.

It is important to look deeper into the problem. That is great that you've decided to pay attention to all the unpaid work that women have to do daily and still go to work to make some money. A lot of people can not even see the problem in it subconsciously pushing women out of any scientific field.

I hope you will continue working on your idea despite results of this competition because you are doing a hard but necessary thing. By raising awareness we can go much further!
