The main objective of this community engagement project is to empower female-headed households on climate resilient and quickly maturing cash crop agribusiness oriented farming in Arba Minch Zuria Woreda To create awareness of female headed HHs on climate resilient and quickly maturing fruits and vegetable to increase their income in short period of time. Specific objectives To increase awareness of female headed HH on improved ways of cash crop production To provide training on creating efficient and effective long-term market linkages To create awareness about the effect of climate change on cash crop agribusiness To build-up the knowledge and skills of participants and establish formal group of female-headed households on cash crop farming To provide different input packages to selected low income female household headed Activities and methods to be applied on the given community Project We believe that the right implementation and evaluation of this project will satisfy the best interest of the projects final beneficiaries Hence we are initiated to employ a wide range of methods and innovative approaches in order to achieve the overall objective of the community engagement project Activity one Training on empowering female headed households on climate resilient cash crop agribusiness The first activity of this project includes making orientation to the selected sixty female headed households in the project areas This training will encompass the following sub-training points one training on climate resilient and quickly maturing cash crops Two provide training on improved ways of cash crop production for female headed households Three provision of training on creating efficient and effective market linkages Four training on the effect of climate change on cash crops agribusiness Activity two community engagement works One Purchase of input packages and visits to similar projects in Ethiopia

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

In this project female-headed households in the selected kebels will be the direct target groups and the projects final beneficiaries The three kebeles administration offices will select 60 (20 from each) women farmers with experience and initiation on cash crop farming to benefit from the current project Here the project team members will bring an official letter from the university and Arba Minch Zuria woreda administration office to the selected Kebele administrations In the letter the purpose of this community training and engagement project must be stated and its benefit to the community has to be elaborated Then the administration office will connect the selected female headed households to the project team members for better communication and implementation of the project. They will do this with the understanding that the project has promising capacity in promoting cash crop and agribusiness oriented farming in the kebeles and in fact builds the capacity of the farmers currently working in the sector As the project is highly beneficial for the society its day-to-day needs will be taken care of by all stakeholders The main stakeholders to this project are Arba Minch Zuria woreda office of Agriculture and Rural Development Women Association and Women Affairs in the woreda Woreda and kebelle Administrations The project inputs outputs and outcomes will be monitored and evaluated for further multiplayer effect and to ensure the project sustainability Activity plan is implemented and progress report is audited; Budget plan is monitored and evaluated with right strategy Acceptable checklists and feedbacks are used to identify the project success and failure sides; and Further scaling up strategy to other catchment areas of the university is investigated

Plans for implementation and sustainability

Up on the approval of the proposal, this project work will start from making contract agreement with the project owner and collaborating institution (Arba Minch University) and having successful communication with the woreda and kebele administrations The administrations will select 60 female headed households and the selected household heads will then be oriented about the project and grouped into sections based on the kind of the vegetable or fruit they are already working on or initiated to start with Successful communication will be done with microfinance in collaboration with Arba Minch Zuria woreda administration office to provide the groups with capital in the form of loan to cover input (seed, fertilizer and labor) costs Then the project team will familiarize and connect them with the urban trade partners in Arba Minch town For the successful implementation of this empowerment project a series of meetings twelve days kebelle level training and hand on refreshment orientations will be delivered to all actors involved in the community engagement work. The orientation and training will be supported with manually prepared and local language based brochures and posters whereas in the three workshop sessions, the groups will make oral presentation on their overall farming system irrigation and input utilization adapted business plan and marketing mechanism. Following the presentation the team members will provide the farmers with technical and scientific knowledge of cash crop and agribusiness oriented farming Finally follow-ups will be conducted as the farmers go to next production session with the new knowledge and skills This community engagement project will cover three purposively selected kebeles based on their potential to irrigation and irrigable land Accordingly Genta Kanchama Shara and Lante Kebeles are selected for the purpose of fifteen days training orientation and workshop sessions to be undertaken
