Butter & Batter
Explain your idea in details:
We came up with this idea because we were all depending on sweets or coffee to get us through our study sessions. According to the results of our study, college students have developed a dependence on caffeine and sugar-sweetened drinks like energy drinks (Murad 2017). However, consuming too much of those beverages can cause a variety of health issues, including type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance (DiNicolantonio, O'Keefe, & Lucan 2015). According to polls, sweet treats and snacks with a chocolate focus can be a perfect substitute for those drinks. This is based on research demonstrating that consuming cocoa flavonoids improves cognitive performance in individuals (Grassi et al. 2016). Additionally, due to the presence of the mood-regulating substances serotonin, endorphins, and the dopamine precursor tyrosine, chocolate has a beneficial influence on mood and can lower stress hormone levels (Nehlig 2013). Making the study hours more effective ultimately results in improved happiness and cognitive function. We consequently determined that this is the ideal time to implement our proposal. Additionally, we came to the conclusion that baked goods are desired products that individuals would undoubtedly spend money on based on a survey we performed among our friends and family. We anticipate that by offering affordable but yet high-quality baked goods, students would switch to them and reduce their consumption of energy drinks and other stimulants, which will ultimately result in a healthier diet and way of life.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
In order to stay competitive in this business due to the rapid changes in current trends. We apply the 3rd, 8th, and 12th SDGs in our business to ensure its sustainability. We attempt to guarantee our clients healthy lifestyles by reducing their reliance on caffeine and energy drinks (SDG 3 Good Health and Well-Being). Studies show that the sugars in the desserts may serve as stress relievers and help us to stay up late and give us the energy to complete our tasks. This clearly demonstrates that by building a bakery and offering chocolate to students and working adults, they will not be depriving themselves of caffeine but rather receive a decent and lower caffeine content that is not harmful to them, but instead has more positive effects on the human body. We decided to take advantage of Malaysia's opportunities to innovate this start-up in order to create employment opportunities for young people, recent graduates, and other deserving candidates regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, or nationality in order to be in line with the eighth goal (Decent Work and Economic Growth). With Malaysia is going through the recovery phase, we tend to play our part in giving back to the community and supporting the economic growth of the country. Evidence shows that people prefer to use these plastic bags over recyclable ones since the latter must be cleaned after each use and are therefore more inconvenient to them. As a result, we decide to charge RM0.20 for each plastic bag needed by customers to encourage them to help in saving the environment (SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production). By doing this so, we hope that Malaysias plastic waste can be reduced.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Our bakery is a start-up business where we will be selling a variety of cookies, brownies, and muffins. At the moment, all the team members will contribute their own money for the bakery however in the long term, we will find suitable investors to fund us so we have access to more capital and, therefore we will be able to widen our product portfolio. Also, retained earnings will be another source of funding for Butter & Batter in the long run. Besides that, instead of baking we are outsourcing our products therefore we will also providing job opportunities to our local bakers as they could have been affected by the pandemic, therefore this is a win-win situation for both the parties. For the time being, we are operating our business solely on our own, however, we have thought of collaborating with other food and beverages business or even social media influencers in order to reach a wider market. We will be operating our business online as well, to be in reach with our targeted customers who are students or working adults from the age 18-35 but doesn't reside in Sunway. We put a heavy emphasis on our marketing and branding strategy. As we target young adults, social media platforms would be our main marketing channels. Getting youngsters to post and share about our products to bring in more customers. Moreover, with them being socially active and up-to-date with trends, our branding and how we keep up with trends is crucial. The all things health-conscious and environmentally-friendly trends are here to stay and they are championed by youngsters. We would appeal to those by the use of recyclable materials and advocating for healthy food ingredients. Through that, we gain a competitive advantage as a sustainable brand.
