Explain your project in details:

BEFLY is a startup that focuses on managing organic waste from cities for its transformation into food through bioconversion using an insect called Black Soldier Fly. We are dedicated to the breeding of this insect, which in the larvae stage has the capability to feed and grow on different organic waste effluents to transform them into a larval biomass rich in high quality protein and nutrients, ideal for animal feed in swine, poultry, aquaculture and even pets. We offer an ecologican and economical alterative to small animal farmers in the region. In order to save costs and improve production. With functional and nutritional advantages for the animals by using insect protein.

Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development

According to our impact, SDG 13 climate action. According to the Climate Impact Forecast platform, we have estimated according to our production capacity and market share, in one year we can process up to 504 tons of organic waste, avoiding the emission into the atmosphere of 900 thousand tons of CO2 equivalent in one year. Producing an ecological protein, which will be used to replace a traditional protein source such as soybean meal by 50%, this translates into avoiding the emission of 4.72 tons of CO2 per year. SDG 2: Zero hunger. We offer an economical and locally produced protein alternative, without relying on imported inputs in the region, which we sell to pig farmers. They will be able to save on production costs and even invest in more animals, thus contributing to improving food security in the region. Allowing them to save at least 11% on production cost in a yea, without variation on the price. We are aligned with 6 SDG indicators, as metrics of the oru project. We are also working with the incubator mentors to adjust the metrics of each indicator adapted to the context of the region.

Sustainability and future plans

According to our business model, we produce protein-rich insect meal that we offer to animal producers in the region and, as an advantage of our circular economy process, we have extra income, as the waste from the process is sold as organic fertiliser. Our beachhead market is focused on supplying small and medium-sized pig producers in the north of the department of Cauca, where pig production is concentrated in the region, and in the first year we will have a 2.9% share of a market valued at 1.3 million dollars in feed demand per year. In the second year, we will be able to expand into pig farms located in two departments with a 3.2% share of a market valued at USD 4.8 million in feed demand per year. By the fourth year, we expect to reach the national market by developing feed diets for poultry, fish and even pets. For our funding source, In 2021 (Q4) we received an investment fund, as seed capital of $50,000 USD as one of the two winners of the Sustainable Community Investment Fund project organised by Royal Road Accelerator, capital necessary for the construction of a plant and acquisition of machinery. We plan to further scale up our solution, to process more organic waste and to benefit more animal producers in the region, so we are open to investment funds and to the development of environmental and social projects using this insect.
