Waste Clinical Insurance

Published on June 20, 2016 um 21:14

Explain your idea in details:

OBJECTIVES: Nigeria is classified by world bank as low middle income, and Nigeria has above 150 million population. 70% of the population remain without health coverage, house hold spend about 2.1% of their total consumption on health, many people cannot get access to health due to financial constraint. With this waste clinical insurance which uses waste product as a financing tool, this can make the community mobilize their own unused resources to improve healthcare access, and break down the barrier between health facilities and community members, and at the same time get waste out of their environment thereby ensuring clean environment and reduces the rate of infections in the environment. It will also help them to save money that they would have paid to government to dispose their waste. ACTIVITIES: With this program, community gives their waste to the clinic regularly, afterward, the collected waste product will be processed in two ways: organic waste to fertilizer by compost method, and the inorganic waste will be sold to collectors. Each month, the money collected will be used to cover the health care need of that community in holistic matter. The work will mostly be done on volunteer basis and at the end, stipends will be paid to the volunteers. The worker will consist of both male and female. Mini pharmacy will also be set up. INNOVATIONS: There are number of groups with waste collection initiative and insurance scheme, however we are the only one to combine both in Nigeria. Our distinctive characteristics are (1) using waste product. (2) applying holistic health system (3) social enterpreneurship and social engineering (4) broad access because all citizen can join the program (5) community independence (6) increase value waste product exponentially (7) manage sanitation improvement (8) provides employment for the residence of that community.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

TARGET: This project is targeting goal no 3: Good health and well being, where everyone is able to get access to to good health care including those in rural area at affordable rate. This will cover health care in holistic manner, covering the patients treatment ( curative) making health improvement program (promotive), preventing illness(preventive), and rehabilitative aspect such as free medical counseling, laboratory test. It also targets goal no 6: clean water and sanitation, because by them collecting their waste makes the environment clean from disease and some vectors for some diseases like mosquitoes etc, and this will also help the community to access good drinking water. It also targets goal no 8, decent work and economic growth. There is a word that health is wealth, and also this project will provide decent work for many citizens of the community in different area like, in the waste collection, the conversion process, in the mini pharmacy, in marketing the inorganic containers and etc. Goal no 5,.gender equality because, the organizers will use both male and female. There wound not be any gender preference. Goal no 12 responsible and production. MEASURES TO EVALUATE SUCCESS; Massive replication,(a) creation of new program in other regions (initiation),(b) ensure power of sustainability (Stabilization), (c) social self reliance ( Independence), how the health of the people in the community improved, awards and recognitions from the community and those outside, all this will be used to evaluate the success of the program.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

BUSINESS MODEL: Potential link
- expanding the waste clinical insurance pharmaceutical market, the micro insurance may also cover pharmaceuticals associated with the conditions treated.
-creating new distribution for WCI pharmacy; the health care service (clinic) may include drug kiosks unit serving the market
- research and development opportunity: the rural community is prone to various diseases due to personal ( lack a knowledge to support healthy behavior) and environment, ( eg pollution, poor sanitation) factors this will be an idea subject for research on various diseases.
- selling of the fertilizers produced by the waste and the inorganic products also sold.
FINANCING SOURCE: The main revenues comes from waste management, sales of the recyclables/up re-cycling products and compost ( from processed organic waste), other potential revenues are service cost paid by non members and small fees for waste processing( lower than the cost of neighborhood waste service fee), the mini pharmacy.
COLLABORATORS: (a) Ministry of health, ministry of Environment

Really interesting idea. waste management remains another very big problem in Africa. In Ghana, there exist also waste management companies as well as a national health insurance on which every citizen is supposed to be registered. I believe the premium could be incrementally adjusted and with arrangement with these companies, local authorithies and communities, payment and collection of waste could be included on the insurance scheme. Great idea.
