Explain your idea in details:
It is a community based green social venture and consists of a group of young environmentalists who always dream not to search for jobs rather to create new employment along with ensuring environmental sustainability. Therefore, unskilled slum and floating people will be engaged as workers. The main focus of Wasteless is economic growth, employment creation, and environmental conservation by resources recovery from discarded materials, products, and wastes. Thus, it can fulfil several goals of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) along with Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of United Nations that can facilitate to create sustainable world and a better place for all. #OBJECTIVES: Separately collection & disposal of medical waste (MW); Valuable resources & energy recovery from MW; and New employment for environmental graduates & unskilled floating people. #ACTIVITIES: Supply source segregation materials to each healthcare entity (HCE); Provide training for waste handlers & workers; Regularly collection of stored waste within 11 pm to 7 am; Waste treatment to control pollution & destroy germs; Energy recovery from non-recyclable waste; Recover plastics & metals; and Final disposal of treated residues. #INNOVATIVE APPROACHES: Introducing training to workers to facilitate safely collection of MW; Confirm source segregation of MW by supplying colour coding drums; Energy recovery from MW to achieve self-sustainability; and Waste recycling to reduce CO2 emissions & pressure on virgin raw materials.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
It has a great impact on society, economy, and environment on following ways: Creating new employment opportunities; Reducing pollution by ensuring sustainable city & environment; Earning cash profits contributes to economic growth; Reducing pressures on new resources protect natural ecosystem; and Minimizing CO2 emissions support to control climate change. #TARGET: Bring all HCEs of Chittagong City under Wasteless services; Earn cash profits & recover resources from wastes; Create new job markets for environmental graduates; Present clean & safe urban environment to city dwellers; Urban mining to reduce pressure on virgin resources; and Minimization of environmental pollution. #SUCCESS EVALUATION MEASURES: Contribution in social & national economic growth; New employment & poverty reduction; Reduction of pollution & sustainability of city environment; Cheap but sufficient industrial raw materials supply; Minimization of CO2 emissions & waste disposal cost; and Others inspired to follow Wasteless model. #CURRENT MARKET SCENARIO: Recycling plastics and metals have high market value in local and international market due to high cost of using new raw materials; similarly, their demand is increasing rapidly. Inversely, Bangladesh government is encouraging waste recycling to minimize pressure on natural resources. In addition, government has targeted to contribute 5 to 10 percent to total national electricity supply within 2020 by renewable energy where energy from waste (EfW) is a good opportunity. Hence, waste recycling is getting popularity among private sectors. Further, it will attract green projects from international donors and organizations.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Preliminary Investment: Implementation
Fixed Cost Housing ($950) and buying vehicle ($2,250), autoclave ($550), & recycling machines ($1,200).
Variable Cost (Monthly) Labour cost ($2,250), Fuel cost ($450), land rent ($600), Electricity bill ($300), Research & development ($800), and buying processing raw materials ($650).
Probable Financing Sources
Initial capital investment ($10,000) by sharing all group members or if third party invest; operational cost will be collected by charging all contracted HCEs and Development & expansion investment will be collected from international donors.
Collaborators
All HCEs within Chittagong City; Central & local government; Conservancy Department of City Corporation (Municipal); Department of Environment; Department of Health; and International donors.
Turnover: Sustainability
After completely running Wasteless idea approximately total USD2,000/month profit can be earned by excluding all types of costs from different sources. Inversely, indirectly revenue can be earned by saving waste disposal and pollution control cost.
Your profile
Im Ohidul Alam and 28 years old. I completed B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. in Environmental Science from Institute of Forestry & Environmental Sciences (IFES), University of Chittagong, Bangladesh and completed Masters of Environmental Engineering from UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD), Tongji University, China. I have been researching on medical waste management since 2011; lately on solid waste treatment to recover energy and control pollution. I have several published peer-reviewed scientific papers based on academic research activities. However, I was motivated by observing: Current unfair MW management system, especially private initiative; Informal recycling sectors activities such as scrap shop; Huge potentiality of green social business; Waste management and recycling being lucrative & profitable business; Demands low investment & operation cost; High market value of recycling products & costly new raw materials; Available unemployed people & cheap labour cost; Lack of job market for environmental graduates in Bangladesh; Unfair existing recycling program that pollutes environment; and Lack of proper knowledge about recycling process & market value of recycling products among informal recyclers. Im a young environmentalist and experienced in medical waste, waste recycling, & solid waste treatment. I have a good relationship with all healthcare entities in Chittagong, Local Government, and Department of Environment as well accustomed to work with root level people and can take workload including innovative thinker. I have achieved Tongji President Award 2015 for my academic performance. Besides, I am a regular student member of International Waste Working Group (IWWG) and Human Development Foundation (HDF). In addition, I fought in local and national level entrepreneur competitions (idea category) to materialize long cherished dream.
