Explain your idea in details:
RenewDrive is a recent idea born out of our passion to create a lasting solution to environmental problems, faced by vulnerable populations in the marginalised communities of Nigeria. We realised that far above advocacy and sensitization around climate change, waste management, as well as access to clean livelihood, it becomes necessary to design and implement tangible solutions that will address various environmental issues affecting majorly the rural/urban poor. This initiative differs from what we have been doing in the past, because it is more of a practical-based approach to adapting to and mitigating various effects of climate change in our communities. Ultimately, we aim to connect women in marginalised communities to the alternative clean energy needed for safer cooking at an affordable cost. The impact goes beyond household cooking. While making cleaner form of cooking fuel (when compared to conventional firewood and charcoal) available in rural communities, it also create a veritable source of economic empowerment for women and youth that might be interested in producing and retailing carbon-neutral briquettes made from renewable biomass waste. Objective: Even though there are other forms of cooking energy to be explored as we progress, carbon-neutral briquettes made from agricultural waste as opposed to conventional ones are more sustainable from a climate change perspective. In Sub-Saharan Africa, wood-based fuels account for over 80% of primary energy supply (IEA, 2006). This is certainly not healthy for our environment. You can as well check us on http://renewdrive.com
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The impact of my idea on sustainable development is categorised into two areas, namely, quantitative and qualitative impact. Quantitative Impact: Amount of money saved from buying cooking fuel; Amount of agricultural waste recovered and recycled which may have otherwise been disposed/burnt contributing to carbon (CO2) emission Qualitative Impact: Positive impact on consumers health due to cleaner household cooking; Size of forest resources saved from exploitation for wood-fuel in established communities; Economic empowerment for women; Increased jobs for women and youth; Reduced air-pollution; By 2017, RenewDrive will have directly empowered at least 120 local women, and served 1,800 households indirectly.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
We plan to be financially sustainable majorly through the sales of our carbon-neutral briquettes for institutional and household use. Additionally, through micro-franchising to local entrepreneurs that would be interested in making and retailing the products in their various rural communities around south-western states of Nigeria. RenewDrive team will explore the opportunities of collaborating with other actors in the clean cooking energy business within and outside Nigeria. This will further generate additional impact and revenue for us.
For over 13 months, we have acquired the necessary skills, expertise, and experience in the following areas: Field-based experience on briquettes production using screw pressing and manual briquetting machines; Strong relationship with rural communities in south-western states of Nigeria, as well as different social development actors; Excellent knowledge on the supply of combustible agricultural waste; Development of unique marketing and distribution plan.
All of these will help us in implementing and sustaining our plans for the realization of safe and affordable household cooking for all.
I am a 24 year old social entrepreneur that grew up in a community faced with various societal challenges ranging from poor access to clean water, and clean cooking energy, as well as high rate of unemployment and environmental degradation. Against all odds, my parents strived to nurture and provide me with the best form of education I can possibly get around. Their belief and tenacity to give me nothing but the best has been a source of motivation for me. They made me realise the power of vision, goal setting, and determination at a very tender age. Their punchline that I can be whatever I want to be in as much as I believe, work hard, and never relent, has been my driving force in the quest to proffer solution to some of the worlds problems, starting from my immediate community. My interests has been, and will always be helping vulnerable people and marginalised communities lead healthy and productive lives. Recently, RenewDrive was listed among the Best 50 Business Ideas in the British Council Enterprise Challenge 2016.
