Catamaran Eco-Cruise and Adventures in Rodrigues Island
Published on April 21, 2016 um 17:07
Explain your idea in details:
This eco-project is the first one of its kind in Rodrigues Island and will be managed by the applicant and operated by a crew. Eco-cruise and adventure packages will be designed to provide a wide range of sustainable leisure activities to visiting tourists, corporates, students and residents. Educational trips will be also organised for sensitisation and education of travellers on beautiful sites and the importance of maintaining the marine and island biodiversity. When landing on islands, the sites will be cleaned by specific crew members with the optional participation of travellers. The small surrounding islands will be co-maintained with the local government. Upon request of travellers, special packages will be designed for assisting net fishing in the large lagoons of the island. Undersea activities such as diving and undersea walking will be available for travellers to view the magnificent creatures in the immense marine park areas. The travellers will have an opportunity to travel on a 100% eco-catamaran with the policy to promote sustainable tourism. The catamaran will be equipped with clean technologies such as photovoltaic panels and clean engines for energy production. Wastes will be collected and properly treated. The main objectives are: To educate travellers on the natural sites and sustainable tourism, To create employment to reduce poverty as surrounding farmers will be able to sell their organic products To innovate the tourism sector activities To be a role model for sustainable tourism To maintain natural sites. The activities of the project will be either to build a 100% customised eco-catamaran and other sustainable leisure equipment for implementation of several eco-packages. A crew will be recruited and packages finalised before the start of eco-cruising and landing on islands. The innovative approach is the ecological aspect in view of promoting sustainable tourism and use of clean energy while educating travellers.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The project will positively impact on sustainable development. Employment will be created for the crew and farmers involved in organic farming. No products originating from the use of pesticides, hormones and antibiotics will be tolerated. Before the purchase of farm produce, agreement will be signed and production systems will be closely monitored. The cruises will be done on a 100% eco-catamaran with clean solar, wind and wave energy thus no carbon dioxide emissions which are responsible for climate change. The catamaran operated from stored solar, wind and wave energy produced on-board instead of fossil fuels which account for large carbon emissions. It will be a role model for those who wish to invest in such business worldwide. The catamaran will be equipped with latest navigation and sailing technologies for maximum cruising sensation and detection of under sea creatures. The targets are to develop uncountable number of eco-cruise packages and educational tours for travellers of all ages and to maintain the visiting sites clean and natural. A website and social network will be set up for online booking and sales, and education of travellers before cruising. Poverty will be reduced by employment creation for both the crew and surrounding small planters. Different age groups will be encouraged to try this memorable and unique experience to visit memorable sites. The measures to evaluate success are the number of new and repeating travellers that cruise on the eco-catamaran. The number of outings carried out per month from the record books. The number of persons employed directly and indirectly from the enterprise over a specified time-period. Amount of clean energy produced on-board for catamaran operation. The number of sites protected and maintained. Number of new sustainable tourism strategies adopted by the business.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The project will be managed by Sabriino Clair, the applicant and promoter. A customised 100% eco-catamaran will be constructed and commissioned for USD 40,000. A website and social network will be launched and will be free of charge. All relevant permits will be applied for at the Commission for Tourism prior to operation in the lagoons with payment of USD 715. The project will be registered with renowned trip organisers or tour operators.
Products and Services: Tickets for packages ranging from eco-cruise to educational tours in the wide lagoons. Customised cruises are also permitted.
Target Customers: Visiting tourists and local residents of all ages.
The sustainability of the project will be ensured by using 100% renewable energy to operate the catamaran thus reducing the costs of operation. New leisure and ecological activities will be created for diversification thus attracting more new and repeating travellers. The management will be backed by one member crew to ensure continuity of the project. Promotion and advertising campaigns will be organised continually to conquer new markets.
The financing source will be from loan from bank and government grants.
I am Sabriino Clair aged 25 years from Rodrigues, small island of the Republic of Mauritius situated in the Indian Ocean. I am a B.Sc. (Hons.) graduate in Food Science and Technology (University of Mauritius) and currently a Masters student in Nutrition (Open University of Mauritius). Tourism, fishing and agriculture are main economic pillars of Rodrigues and my family is involved in the agricultural and fishing (lagoon fishing) sectors. These activities have allowed me to complete my tertiary studies. After my B.Sc. graduation in 2012, I returned to Rodrigues where I worked three years for the Rodrigues Regional Assembly, as Service to Mauritius Intern under an internship programme under the aegis of the Mauritian Ministry of Finance (2013-2016). During the internship I worked on the implementation of eight agricultural incentive schemes and several agribusiness development projects. I was Project Manager (January 2014-June 2015) on a GEF-Small Grants Programme funded project: Alternative Livelihoods for Fishers Communities in Rodrigues where the goal was to redeploy fishers in land-based activities involving plantation of tubers and processing in view of tacking land degradation. A solar dryer was designed and built for the drying of tubers and wide varieties of agricultural produce. I worked as Food Technologist on a project involving the deployment of fisherwomen for lime processing into condiments and other products. I also did a project on Thermal Process Optimisation and Validation in a renowned tuna processing factory in Mauritius with the aim to reduce energy use (June July 2011). I am motivated to be self-employed in the tourism sector and to participate in the protection and maintenance of environment. My motivations also extend to the creation of employment and also education of travellers while cruising. Some of my qualities are Good computer literacy Project and business management skills Results-Oriented Teamwork Self-motivating
