Explain your idea in details:
Unemployment levels in Uganda have are at 80%. The highest number of unemployed people is also the youth who make up over 75% of the population. The youth in the country, Africa as well know the problems at their doorsteps and also hold the solutions in their hand. The solution to the problems facing African neighborhoods is in the hands of the young people/ the artist at your corner. Through out history, art and design has created innovative solutions to problems in the world ranging from furniture, housing, wells, energy solutions and so on. There is great potential in the art world from which Studio Makula intends to exploit. Studio Makula identifies artistic and innovative talent. It then empowers the selected people by providing the workspace, tools, skills and financial support to assist these young people see their innovative solutions hit the market place. These young people are empowered to the level of self sustainability i.e at the level of company set-up. As a result, different young people with innovative ideas and products are raised to the development of companies that can in turn provide employment to other people in the communities. Makula owns a percentage of the company which money it uses to invest in other young people. The activities we engage in are, scouting for talent, arranging competitions with specific outcomes in mind where winners are selected and supported, design collaboration and discussion, product prototype development and product design, furniture and interior design, architectural visualisations among others. The vision of the project is to, CREATE, INSPIRE AND INNOVATE.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The target of the project is to start over 5 design companies over the next 10 years and to employ over 1000 youth per company.
