Smart Solar Microgrid Street and Roadway Lighting

Econergco (Eco Friendly Energy Company) West Africa Limited seeks to pilot Smart Solar Microgrid Street and Roadway Lighting initiative in Nigerian cities so as to light up the streets and roadways in a green, clean and sustainable manner. Currently, streets and roadways in most Nigerian cities are not light up in the night as a result of erratic power supply from the main grid. These, which encourage crime and often times lead to accident while only a few states powered their streets and roadways with diesel generators. The LED street lights and wireless control system are expected to reduce the present annual electricity consumption by more than 61 percent, and thus reduced energy and maintenance costs while improving the quality of illumination and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. The use of diesel generators to power street lights is not only expensive to run, but prone to corruption and diesel powered engines are one of the largest contributors to environmental pollution problems worldwide as it emits tons of greenhouse gas into the environment. The Smart Solar Microgrid Street and Roadways Lighting Initiative will ensure our streets are powered with green, clean and sustainable energy that encourage growth and help the environment thereby making our cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Climate change is real; it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating, DiCaprio Nigeria, with an installed energy generation capacity of about 10,000 megawatts currently generates and supply an average of 3,200 megawatts of electricity for the population of about 170 million people. The low supply capacity when compared to the installed capacity is as a result of short supply of gas to the power generation plant due to gas pipe vandalism and gas flaring, while the other supply from the hydro is affected by low volume of water flow into the dam reservoir. These show how exposed Nigeria is to climate change and its effects on the supply of electricity to power streets and roadways. Furthermore, some states in Nigeria powered their streets and roadways with diesel generator in an effort to provide reliable electricity supply to street lights. The Solar Powered Smart Street and Roadways Lighting Initiative will ensure our streets are powered with green, clean and sustainable energy that encourage growth and help the environment thereby making our cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. We hope to achieve nationwide installation of our smart street and roadway lighting within the first five years after initial pilot project that will take place in the first eighteen month of the project. The success of the project will be measured with the use of United States Energy Smart Grid Metrics developed by Energetics Incorporation.

Econergco West Africa Limited which is championing the vision of helping individuals, organizations and municipalities/state governments meet energy savings and energy management challenges with an integrated comprehensive approach to energy efficiency and renewable energy. The business model adopted involved partnering with the state government to finance the retrofitting of their street and roadway lights to smart light heads, which could save electricity consumption from between 50-70% due to dimming and control capability. More so, a Power Purchase Agreement would be signed with the respective state government for 20 years to buy power from the solar power storage system at an agreed rate per kilowatt so as to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the street lights.
Through the sales and development of our innovative Solar Powered Smart Microgrid Street and Roadway Lighting with Wireless Control System to the states government and private businesses who has vast area of outdoor lighting to electrify sustainably, we sure to break even and be self funded in the short term and also, there is an investors interest which we are currently considering so as to ensure more liquidity so as to scale up our business.

Falaye Olusheyi Sunday is a result oriented low carbon and sustainability advocate, entrepreneur and property management professional with over seven years experience that cut across business start-up, property development and management, estate surveying and property valuation, and urban sustainability and green development. More so, with vast experience managing contractors and vendors, working on teams, and completing projects in a deadline-driven environment. He has a flair for disruption and always work on uncharted ideas that is unique to African settings. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Estate Management and Masters Degree in Urban Management and Development, with specialization in Urban Environmental Management and Managing and Financing Urban Infrastructures from Federal University of Technology Minna Nigeria and Erasmus University Rotterdam Netherlands respectively. He is the Chief Executive Officer and founder of Econergco West Africa Limited and EcoCity Development Limited. Econergco West Africa Limited is championing the adoption of renewable energy system in Nigeria to power Street Lights using Wireless Control System for Efficiency, and also advocating for efficient power usage through the use of LED Lighting in order to reduce carbon emissions. The motivation for the idea was gotten while living in the Netherlands, and travelling across Europe.
