STINGLESS BEES BREEDING CENTRE

Explain your idea in details:
Stingless Beekeeping industry is among the industry which is growing in a large extent in Tanzania and in East Africa; this is due to the increase in awareness of the people on the importance of bees and their products. As the industry grow up many people engage on beekeeping mainly for pollination purpose, to get bee products and or to get both. People now are engaging in agriculture by using technology and green houses and they realize the important of bees in increasing their yield and improve their products. Stingless Bees are friendly and have the advantage of being able to pollinate different crop regardless of the size of flowers but also their product like honey is very expensive in the market because its three times the price of the honey of stinging bees. Due to the high demand for Stingless Bees Colonies there is need to open STINGLESS BEE BREEDING CENTRE which will ensure the production of many stingless bees colonies by using breeding method/technology. Through this technology we will reduce the destruction of forest which is caused by people who are looking for stingless bees nests in their natural habitats (forests) because this type of bees normally nests in trees carves/holes and in the ground. The big goal for using native stingless bees for sustainable development will be the creation of breeding capacity. The main object of this idea is to insure production of sting less bees colonies by using bee breeding technology which involves using a single colony to produce more than one colonies. The approach is to start a workshop where we will construct the special hives for sting less bees breeding.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The expectation of this idea will be; Increase in the awareness on the importance of stingless bees in both its products and pollination services, Development of breeding techniques and interest of local communities for the breeding of stingless bees as an activity of sustainable development, Assurance on the availability of stingless bees colonies in the country, Increase on crops yield and improved crops in the country and it will result to food security, Decrease of deforestation caused by stingless bees nest poaching by cutting down trees with nests of stingless bees hence sustainable ecosystem. Sustainable development and increase on living standard of people. Insurance of food supply To provide the community with educational material for stingless bees breeding and use for educational purposes and for hobbyists; The big goal for using native stingless bees for sustainable development will be the creation of breeding capacity, where the male biased sex ratio of the colonies in nature will be our main richness.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
This business will involve keeping of stingless bees, breeding of stingless bees and construction of special hives for breeding and keeping stingless bees. Product and services expected are:
Stingless bees products that are honey, propolis, pollen etc
Stingless bees colonies for sale
Pollination services for farmers by renting the bees colonies during the blooming period
The customers of this business will be beekeepers, farmers and also middlemens who come to the company buying the product and supply to consumers. Also we will deal also on keeping stingless bees for the purpose of getting their product. In the process also we will do pollination service were will be renting bees colonies to the farmers who needs bees for pollination during flower blooming period, therefore we will provide the service according to the agreement and earn money for a service we provided.
In the center there will be three units
- Administration unit: The organizer of all activities done in the center
- Workshop unit: This will deal on construction of special hives for bee breeding and
- Breeding unit: This will deal on management of stingless bees for breeding purpose
The financial source for this business will come from different grants, loans and self money
I am Simon Joseph Parmet; i was born on the 20th January 1984 and currently i am a third year student(finalist) at Sokoine University of Agriculture(SUA) undertaking a bachelor degree in Forestry. Before i had a two year Diploma on Forestry and Beekeeping at Forestry Training Institute (FTI) Olmotonyi - Arusha and i had a chance to serve as a forest Officer in Rungwe District Council since 2010 to 2012 and then served as a Beekeeping officer in Mbeya Regional Secretariat in 2013 where i get a chance to be admitted in a three years bachelor degree in SUA. During the time i served as a Forest officer and also Beekeeping Officer i have observed challenges facing beekeeper, farmers and also the threat caused to the forests. One of the challenge is shortage/scarcity of stingless bee colonies, there is a big awareness to people on the importance of stingless bees hence great demand by beekeepers, farmers and also other people who are only looking for the nests for sale in order to earn money. The only way to solve this problem is to start a STINGLESS BEE CENTER which will ensure the production of colonies by using breeding method which is environmental friendly.
Stage of Idea
This is a piece of log which was cut out of a tree in order to remove the nest of stingless bees which is in this part of a tree. It is an usual thing but it has a lot of negative impact to the environment, trees are cut down only because they host the stingless bees colony.
Below here you can see hives used for keeping stingless bees after being removed out of the log which was their natural home. Each hive here have a stingless bees colony and each hive has cost the life of a single tree. Just imagine how will our forest look like after five years if we do not find the solution for this. However the demand for bee colonies is increasing every day and as demand increases the price also per colony increases hence number of people who are looking for the nests in the forest will increase.
Below here you can see the hives and logs with nest of stingless bees ready to be transfered to the empty hives for domestication.
