Locality is one of the most serious reasons why enterprises cannot operate efficiently because of customers lack. This idea addresses that problem for the civil engineering sector and specifically concerns the provision of qualitative civil engineering without the physical presence of the civil engineer in the field. For the implementation of this idea, internet and high technological IT systems will be used. The services provided will be limited to structural civil engineering and specifically to structural analysis and design of new buildings, structural assessment and redesign of existing buildings, project budgets, CAD services. In order to provide these services, the engineer is based on the studies of other engineers (e.g. architectural sheets) and (the engineer provides the project contractor with construction sheets and instructions. The data that the engineer receives and sends can easily be transferred through the internet. The differentiation of the above will be based on the integration of the innovative approach of the organized provision through the internet. For that reason the above activities must be differentiated: Webpage The enterprises webpage will be its main element. It will be the medium for the customers to learn about the business and communicate with it. Marketing The brand of the enterprise must inspire trust to attract customers in a business that is traditionally provided differently. The marketing plan will include the webpage, email marketing and advertisements in social media. Quality of the data received The quality of the data produced by a structural engineer depends directly on the quality of the received data. A procedure must be created, reassuring that the received data are accurate. A special form for the received data of each project including control points of them (photographs, measurements repeat etc.) must be created.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Through the implementation of this idea, it is expected that a civil engineering enterprise will achieve greater economic productivity, especially when it is located in an area with general economic crisis or specifically crisis in the constructional sector. Through the integration of high technological IT systems, the enterprise will be able to increase its target market and expand it to global level. When the suggested diversification will be implemented, the enterprise will become a qualitative and cost efficient solution to structural engineering problems. It is expected that the operational costs of the enterprise will decrease significantly and therefore the cost of the provided services. The decrease of the cost is a result of the following: No transportation costs to clients No costs for printing construction plans and studies as everything will be sent through internet to the clients No costs for secretarial support because everything will be organized digitally and will be handled through high technological IT systems Moreover, this idea could make an impact in territories that lack civil engineers or the engineers do not have the necessary infrastructure. So through the use of internet, a specialized civil engineer can give solutions and instructions for construction problems in territories where advice is hard to get. For the assessment of the ideas impact the following can be used: the annual turnover the customers opinion about the activities of the enterprise the number, the kind and the location of the projects the enterprise will undertake The above will be a reason to review the initial business plan so it is based on quality and cost effectiveness.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
As described above, the construction procedure is like a chain. It starts with the architectural design and other engineers measurements; it proceeds with the structural analysis and design by a structural engineer and ends with the construction part by a contractor. All these procedures can easily be and usually are outsourced. The suggested business will act upon this model as a freelancer structural engineer of buildings. That will give the opportunity to the enterprise to get specialized in that sector and become a global freelancer in that.
For the ideas implementation, besides the operational costs, expenses need to be made for:
the purchase of specialized civil engineering software, of a computer with capability to run the software and other devices for the internet connection and communication
the marketing plan
a certified and functional quality assurance system (it is important especially in the beginning for the enterprise to earn the trust of its clients)
The enterprise will be established in E.U. So, it is possible to be benefited by E.U funds through projects for start ups.
Alternatively, the enterprise will start with own funds but with reduced provision of services and with the use of low cost software until it is established in the market. After that, it can expand upon its possibilities.
For all the above to come true the enterprise will cooperate closely with external professionals. Accounting, management and certification of the quality assurance system will be carried out by external collaborators.
Last but not least, the close collaboration with the other engineers in the construction link is necessary for a successful result.
I am 25 years old and have recently (1.5 years ago) graduated from the civil engineering department of Democritus University of Thrace in Greece with a specialty in structural engineering. Upon my graduation, I came face to face with the problem of job finding. In Greece, after the economic crisis, the structural sector has almost been vanished. So, finding a job in that sector is a puzzle. After research in the internet I came across the crowdsourcing websites and got familiarized with the term. Then the idea came: How can a civil engineer effectively become a global freelancer? That challenge is what the job finding puzzle has been transformed into and the above described idea is my solution to that problem. Solving problems is one of my greatest passions (and luckily for me one of the greatest requirements for being an engineer). The solution I gave to that problem is the provision of structural engineering services through the internet. I have a strong belief in the possibilities of the internet and thus, in the quality of services that can be provided through it, if the idea becomes a well organized business plan. My character fits, in my opinion, with the freelancing character of the business. I like the flexibility and the risks that are necessary to take to be successful in this job. Finally, for the time being I can only dream of the outcome of my idea, but It will definitely be based on globality and respect to quality.
