Idle to Ideal: Transforming the Agriculture Landscape
Published on June 16, 2016 um 13:46
Explain your idea in details:
We want to be able to lease highly viable agricultural lands that are left untended or any space that can accommodate plants or animals. The duration of the lease will be about 3-5 years, to reshape the tract of land/space into something that will benefit the community. We say space because there are spaces in urban areas that can be transformed. Rooftops and abandoned buildings are two examples that come to mind. We can also put up community gardens in urban areas. This way, people will be able to see where the produce comes from, be assured of its freshness and the entire community can partake in the activity. Kids will learn to plant and to recognize planted vegetables. The garden can also be a park, an attraction/community centerpiece where people can visit and gain appreciation for agriculture and the work it entails. Finally, people can harvest the produce themselves, which would ensure them of the high quality of the products. This project also aims to build the capacity of youth and women; teaching them farming methods that are science-based, guided by the principles of sustainable agriculture and good agricultural practices. We will be employing and training them on how to grow these vegetables and herbs and raise animals. The main reason why we chose to work with youth is that the world needs young farmers to learn the skills and keep abreast with the technologies that modern agriculture has to offer. Training them in the scientific way of farming will lead to less guesswork and will help sharpen their minds to be critical thinkers. This project can help educate them, giving them a skill that they can parlay into a rewarding career.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
1. Turn idle lands to farms -Finding idle but viable lands; always taking into consideration ecological balance -Conversion of these lands into farms with proper farm planning -Implementation and Monitoring -Finding a market for the produce; finding a fair price to benefit the farmer 2. Training and Employing the next generation of Farmers (with special focus on Out of school youth and Women) -Science-based farming methods -Community growing schemes -Sustainable Agriculture Guidelines -Backyard farming 3. Creating/Finding a market for the produce -Online market -Weekend Markets -Institutional buyers These are the objectives of this idea. Our group aims to help enhance food security, enforce good agricultural practices while practicing sustainable agriculture. Educating people (thru blogs and social media posts) about agriculture and how much work goes into producing food can increase people's appreciation of the food they eat. It could lead to less food wastage. We can measure success by the following parameters: 1. Area of land converted from idle to ideal 2. Number of youth trained 3. Number of women trained 4. Production data 5. Number of readers (blog) 6. Revenue generated
Plans for implementation and sustainability
All farms will be made available through crowdfunding. We aim to raise funds through a website and a companion mobile app. The website and app will contain the farm plan for each site that we will select to convert. Through this, the investor can see where and how the investment is being utilized.
All of the necessary expenditures from inputs, rent on the land, salaries for the farmers, equipment, seeds etc,. will be properly planned for. Updates on the status of the farm will be posted on the website and app. Through this, we are able to educate our investors on how a farm works and what it takes to run a farm.
Net Profits will be split likes so:
Land owner- 15%
All farm plans will be made by Dream Agritech Consultancy Services, a group of agriculturists from different fields of specialization.
We also would like the opportunity to work with like-minded people. State universities, organizations, NGOs or anyone who share the same vision are more than welcome to be a part of this initiative.
