Naturally Sweet

Explain your idea in details:

My idea is to open up a centre where people residing in Gozo are given the option of various goods and services in relation to their diabetes. From personal studies, I found that diabetes in Gozo is still considered as a Taboo and most people are afraid to share their condition. Communicating and sharing experiences with other people going through the same situation can be very beneficial to the individuals and society since it increases awareness and knowledge on living with this chronic illness. In todays society, new products are constantly being introduced; however, most products such as meters and testing strips cost a lot. Therefore, my idea is to provide products at cheap rates and offer advice on the best option for each and every individual. It will also provide products such as supplements and oils that can help the individual have a healthier, well-controlled life. The centre will also provide specialist services, educational sessions, and also group sessions. Such activities will help individuals increase their knowledge on living a healthy lifestyle and most importantly, not alone. If: we raise awareness of proper approach to diabetes Then: Stigma will decrease and positive behavior changes will be made. Goal: To be more aware of the condition (its lifestyle & opportunities) and increase acceptance of the chronic illness within Gozitan society. Objectives: Increase discussions and activities Decrease stigma Social change Empower and enhance youths to properly manage the condition Improve effectiveness, impact and sustainability Education/ Development Strengthen dialogue with newly diagnosed people. Vision: To be the primary support and educator for people with diabetes of the Gozitan Community that will lead to a better and informative society. Mission: Facilitating through various means the development of a dynamic & informed society in order to positively impact newly diagnosed individuals and others.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

It is important to ensure that every individual affected by the condition gets access to the best possible treatment and standards It is also every persons right, irrespective of their age, ethnic group, location or type of diabetes to know what diabetes is, what are its complications and how can one live with it. The targets are: To raise awareness of diabetes in the Gozitan Society by 15%; Decrease the stigma that diabetes carries within the Gozitan Society by 5%; To provide information and resources on how to live with diabetes and how to prevent possible complications by 50% by; To increase the number of individuals who check their blood glucose levels by 30% and therefore, follow the advice of healthcare professionals if needed; To encourage individuals with diabetes to improve their self-care in order to prevent complications by 60%; To incite national and local authorities to create better services in Gozo therefore increasing the number of patient visits within the Gozo General Hospital by 50%. First and foremost, a SWOT Analysis will be conducted. This is a tool that will help us gain a good understanding of the internal strengths and weaknesses of Naturally Sweet, and the external opportunities and threats which may enable or hinder us from doing this project. Secondly, in order to evaluate the success of this idea, the organisation will implement an outcome evaluation (branching from summative) to investigate whether the project has had an effect on the Gozitan Population. The evaluation will also show how well the objectives have been met by the project scheduled activities; and identify where the project can improve for future reference. Also, pre and post population indicators and enrolment forms would be reviewed for statistics.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

In order to consider all factors, both internal and external stakeholders must be taken into consideration. Internal stakeholders involve the Ministry for Gozo, Gozo General Hospital, Ministry of Energy and Health, Maltese Diabetes Association, International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organisation.

The idea is to provide goods and services to help individuals living with diabetes live a healthier lifestyle and raise awareness through campaigns and educational talks. The business will create earnings through fundraising events, services offered and goods sold. Other options include a subscription model, advertisement of Third parties model, and a commission-based model.

It is important to collaborate with the Malta Diabetes Association. This is because the association, founded by Mr Tancred Zammit in 1988, has the resources needed in order for this organisation to succeed. The organisation will then adapt the services according to the Gozitan Population. However, the organisation will not be under the same committee.

Since this idea regards the Sustainable Development goal number three, the organisation will apply for EU Funds in order to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for the Gozitan Population. For example, for World Diabetes Day, an awareness campaign based in the Gozitan society will take place every year. This will aid in increasing awareness and providing support to the individuals and families facing diabetes on a daily basis. Projects such as this awareness campaigns will be 80% EU funded while the remaining 20% will be at the cost of the organisation.

Your profile

My name is Rachel Portelli and I was born on the 24th of August, 1993. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was three years old, and it has affected me in many ways but above all, has strengthened my determination to make a difference within this field. I have just finished reading a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Social Policy at the University of Malta. Having attended several experiences abroad such as the European Youth Event and Euroscola, and also exchanges on Policy, I gained significant experience in researching and planning such travel and taking care of all the necessary administrative arrangements. I also focused my dissertation on Type 1 diabetes. Entitled Social Policy and Type 1 Diabetes: Impact on Family Members, the research purpose of this study was to explore the impact on families of a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, and the services offered, from a social policy perspective. Through my dissertation I gained the skills and knowledge needed to collect data My motivation for doing such a study involves a number of reasons: I was diagnosed on the 24th of February, 1997 and my brother was diagnosed on the 19th of November, 2013. I vividly remember that my diabetes had adverse effects on my family. Another motivation underlying my study is the worldwide increase in this chronic illness. In 2015, an estimation of more than half a million children (ages under 14) live with type 1 diabetes. An estimation of 415 million adults (ages 20-79) live with diabetes. The Maltese government has made diabetes treatment one of its key priorities. We continue to improve and expand the care services provided to diabetes patients, on a central level and in the community.
