Project Overview

Developing a Sustainable Organic Farming Ecosystem in Africa

Our aim is to spark a green farming revolution across Africa. We see a future where the majority of small-scale farmers are trained in the most effective organic farming practices and technological systems for their geographic region. We want farmers across Africa to learn how to harness alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power to meet their energy demands and reduce their total carbon footprint. We want also these farmers to minimize their dependence on harmful pesticides and chemical fertilizers as they learn to employ natural fertilization and pest control techniques that conserve resources and ultimately preserve their natural environment. We will first research and prototype our model of small-scale commercial farming using organic farming practices and low-cost innovative technological systems. We will then document and catalog all of the techniques, practices, and technology we have developed to produce a variety of interactive user manuals and training programs. We will work in partnership with primary, secondary, and tertiary educational institutions to introduce both novice and experienced farmers to the techniques that we will have implemented and optimized on our own farms. We will also assist farmers in acquiring, installing, and servicing the technological systems we have tested. We also intend to establish commercial partnership programs that will provide flexible financing to small-scale farmers along with training and educational programs intended to promote the use of organic farming techniques. We intend to develop local and international supply chains in order to facilitate the production, storage, processing, distribution, and sale of produce. We ultimately hope to develop a complete ecosystem to support economic sustainability in order to drive this process of agricultural renaissance across Africa.
