I am an innovator, entrepreneur, Tv host and CEO of my own start-up company.
I´m constantly looking for
starting production of my innovation and bringing them to market.
My name is Ezedin kamil. I am a 20-year-old student, innovator, Tv host and CEO of my own start-up company. I was born and raised in a rural village called Atat, a rural part of Ethiopia. Ever since I was a child, I was curious about what was in the electronics, and I had a habit of spoiling new home electronics, which angered my family.
When I was a fourth-grader, I went to repair electronics in 2012, and in addition to my school hours, I had used my free time to make money by repairing electronics. I had money not only to me but also to give to my mother. My father’s progress encouraged me to focus only on education. My family is always throwing away items I used to repair electronics. But, Because of my special interest, I was able to repair electronics that could withstand those things. When I was in 7th grade, my mother’s cafe was robbed. To solve that problem, I invented a security alarm using an old cell phone. It was my first and most creative work. The technology works primarily by touch. When, my mother cafe door lock touch by theft the technology makes an automatic phone call to my father’s phone. I applied the technology to my mother’s cafe for the first time, and I took it to school and showed it to my school friends and teachers. With this invention, I received more recognition and encouragement than I had ever imagined. I was very happy about it.
For the first time, I was invited to represent my school in a city-wide innovation competition. I won first place and was awarded the English text book with a certificate. I am more than happy. My school friends began encouraging me by saying that “our school had a good reputation because of your innovation.”
When I won the first city competition in Welkite, I was invited to compete directly at the national level on behalf of the region. On behalf of my region Southern nation national people of Ethiopia, I won the National Innovation Competition and won a laptop computer and a cash prize. The national competition had a profound effect on my life. This showed me that I could be successful wherever I was. Since then I have
been able to invent 35 creative works and 8 mobile apps 13 are patented on save ideas.
When I joined the competition well, from 2017 to 2019, I won first place for three consecutive years in the innovation competitions organized by Wolkite City. In these competitions, I was selected for regional and national competitions and won 2nd rank in 2018 at the national level and in 2019 I won 3rd rank national level. At the same regional level, I won 1st place in 2011 and won a total of 5 laptops in these competitions.
I won 2nd place in the Solve It Regional innovation Competition organized by the US Embassy, Icog-Labs and JICA. I was selected for the national competition. With the invention of a new fire control system called x-fire, I won 6th out of 63 national projects.
X-fire was a technology that makes phone calls alert up to 5 family members as well as fire accident controlling agencies during a fire accident sense
In 2018, when I was in 10th grade, I had a bicycle. When I went to school, the road was Downhill and easy. When I returned, it was very hard to ride a bicycle because the road was uphill. I got a DC motor for my bike and built a solar-powered motorcycle on my own. In that year, the Rural Energy Innovation Competition was organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and I participated in a national competition and received an
$8,000 grant using my solar and electric motor bike. Using this award, I also built a three- wheeled vehicle that can work using solar power and electricity. It was able to carry 60 pounds [500 kg] and travel at 60 miles [60 km] an hour.
In 2019, I was awarded a silver medal and a certificate of recognition by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, for my innovative work at the national level. Following that recognition, many national and international media outlets were able to publicize my creative work. Among them, DW Germany, the BBC, VOA, Ethiopian Television, as well as a number of national and international media outlets introduced my work to the world.
My personal social media pages gained a lot of followers, for example I have over 80,000 followers on my Facebook page. As a result, I am promoting various technologies as well as my personal innovations. For the first two consecutive years in 2019 and 2020, I was awarded the Tana Award for Social Media for Good. In the same year, 2020, the Continental innovation Competition Organizer African Innovation Week has selected me as an Ethiopian brand ambassador and provided an opportunity for me to support innovators.
The outbreak of corona virus was opportunity for me, not a problem because when we are
innovators, I believe we should use the problem as an opportunity to create something new, not as a problem. As a result of the corona virus, the school was closed. I decided to work in this vacant lot of innovations, so I decided to use Corona virus as an opportunity, and I studied Corona virus causing issues. I contributed four different inventions that could be reduced to the spread of corona virus. These include a contact free foot press hand washing machine, covid bracelet which makes an alarm
when users approach face with their hand, mechanical ventilator and an automatic soap and sanitizer dispenser.
After finishing these innovations, I decided that I would spend my free time turning these inventions into products. I needed money for that, so I talked to various private institutions and individuals. I got a grant of 500,000 birr to start that organization. With that support, I was founded an organization called Icon Africa. I was able to sell a hand-wash machine and automatic sanitizer dispenser.
I am now able to create jobs for 4 unemployed people in my organization. I am now a 20- year-old Addis Ababa university first year student and general CEO and founder of my own company. My biggest plan for the future is to change the African narrative.
