INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION & PROMOTION OF READING
My name is Joan Serra Montagut and I’m 27 years old. I was born in Barcelona and I studied Journalism in the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) between 2004 and 2008. I joined a lot of cultural projects related with Intercultural Communication, such as Tahina-Can Expedition (through this experience, I could report from Ecuador and Dominican Republic). I also traveled to Bosnia to be member of a photojournalistic experience. In 2008, I won the European Young Journalist Award organized by the European Commission. During my studies, I participated actively in the political structure of my school and I won a Literature Award called Hiperbòlic with a novel that talks about the Spanish exile in the Dominican Republic after the Civil War. I want to dedicate my professional career to books and implementation of editing projects with groups of people, promoting reading and social awareness. Recently, I’ve created in Mexico SOM Editorial Colectiva. In the future, this organization will bring collective and attractive material to promote reading in several parts of the world. I’ve worked for United Nations in Mexico, firstly as the Communication for Development expert in UNESCO office and then as the external consultant for Communication and Publications area of a United Nations project for Peace Culture in Chiapas. I love Mayan culture and I’ve worked in several projects in this area (the first one in 2008 creating a newspaper with a group of young people in Guatemala). Actually, I coordinate Proyecto Ja’ab. If Proyecto Ja’ab wins this competition, the award will be “given” to all the people that joined this collective dream.

SOM Editorial Colectiva wants to promote reading and political, social, artistic and civic awareness among youth through the creation of collective books and the regional unity. The first project of SOM is Proyecto Jaab, a big 500-people platform of young people that have constructed a collection of 12 books that will be given to all public libraries and universities of the modern Mayan Area, which includes Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Belize and Guatemala. SOM converts cities of the world into reflection scenarios where young people can express themselves through free literature, art and freedom of expression. This revolutionary way of book production respects local identity and regional design and use elements of the own culture to consolidate the collective self-esteem and the approachment to traditional knowledge. The first 12 books of SOM Editorial Colectiva have been made in 12 cities from the Mayan area (San Salvador, Copán Ruinas, Santiago Atitlán, Antigua, Belize City, Tulum, Cancún, Valladolid, Maní, Mérida, Campeche and San Cristóbal de Las Casas). The first phase of the initiative has been to build the books in these cities, and the second one has been to convert one of them, Mérida, the epicenter of Proyecto Jaab, in a young editing platform using universities as collaborators in the different parts of the technical production of the book (design, correction, artistic elements, etc.), mixing the work of all kinds of young people. SOM Editorial Colectiva was born to enhance young people through books and through a generational effort to connect young people with changing and revolutionary activities that want to transform our world.View More
