The ongoing capacity building of teachers and the production of the manual aim to make teaching more effective and focused on strengthening young people's competence in the school environment.
In order to improve capacity building efforts, one of our partners, a member of civil society organizations, with our support, is working closely with pilot schools in Bakossi Park to produce a model teacher's manual on ESD, aimed at strengthening teachers' knowledge and skills in the application of the competency-based approach (CBA) currently applied by the Cameroonian Ministry of Basic Education.
Teams of trainers (ESD teacher coordinators, senior teachers, pedagogical inspectors, and Departmental Delegates for Basic Education, and Secondary Education) continue to be trained on the principles of ESD (definitions, philosophies, scope...) and practice (methodologies, exercises, best practices...), which are successfully reflected in the pilot schools.
While some policy initiatives have already been implemented, including the issuance of letters of authorization to WWF by the Ministry of Basic Education pending the signing of Memoranda of Understanding on the implementation of ESD across Cameroon, efforts are also underway to introduce conservation and sustainable development issues into technical secondary education programmes and teacher training colleges.
ESD involves formal, non-formal and informal educational methods for schools and communities, including conservation, environmental and development issues and best practices. It is in these areas that ESD is seen as having the potential to contribute to biodiversity conservation.
The implementation of ESD aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice, with an emphasis on environmental and development challenges, and takes a holistic approach, focusing on six thematic areas: culture and school spirit, school construction, community, students, teaching and learning, and monitoring and evaluation.
Education for Sustainable Development is an initiative to motivate and empower learners to take action to address conservation and development challenges in their communities, nations, and the world. It is a comprehensive approach aimed at strengthening competence in action, and involves the use of participatory teaching methods and practical activities to make education relevant and empower learners to address issues that immediately affect their local communities, while taking into account challenges at national and global levels.
Main areas of intervention:
Mobilization to advance policies and promote best practices;
Capacity building to raise awareness and initiate actions for sustainable lifestyles and futures;
Green entrepreneurship and innovation among young people;
Creation and strengthening of existing youth networking platforms at national and regional levels.
We are in the process of establishing or strengthening incubators to encourage entrepreneurship and facilitate access for youth champions, who receive support as rallying points for young people meeting the age criteria (between 13-34 years, as defined by national policy) and their networks. We also work with partner institutions to build the capacity of NGOs and youth networks in education and sustainable development, ecological entrepreneurship, sustainable leadership, association management, human rights-based approach, communication and methods of improvement.
By being aware of their rights and the benefits of Sustainable Natural Resource Management (SRM), young people can thus play a vital role in creating and promoting innovative and sustainable models of natural resource management and influential policies. For young people aged 18 and under, the emphasis is on strengthening their skills and capacities to engage in activities that promote sustainable development and highlight sustainable lifestyles.
